I've had this particular player for about a week now and tried to get a decent opinion on it before writing a review.
Battery life is hard to evaluate. 56 hours? maybe. i've been using the rechargable battery which came with the player and i'd give it around 20 hours. The charging bay is a really nice touch. nothing horribly complex but extremely useful and has a very sleek design.
The MZ-N707 feels pretty robust, but haven't and hopefully won't test it to much. it doesn't skip at all, which is one of the great wonders of minidisc. its so much smaller than a discman. it's the ideal portable solution. besides, with sony claiming a minidisc takes up to 320 minutes of music, it is the ultimate portable medium. cheap and plentiful storage (minidiscs are much much cheaper than the kind of mediums used on mp3 players), portable, good battery life, good connectivity with the pc (although you'll take some time getting used to the software). perfect? depends what you're looking for.
It all comes down to sound quality. Putting 320 minutes of music onto on minidisc makes you lose some quality. Most people don't notice. But some songs you will. Some riffs do sound a little different on LP4 (lowest quality). If, like me, you feel absolute bliss in being able to fit 3 radiohead albuns and a complete concert of their's onto one minidisc, you'll hardly care. If not, don't worry. But don't expect filing a minidisc with 320 minutes of cd quality music. And if you're looking for an mp3 player..don't. This is as good as it gets in that regard

this product is great. but, like any product, it has flaws. you cannot import tracks which you have recorded with your microphone. this sucks, because this is one of the main reasons i bought it for.
net md simple burner is a good application. openmg jukebox is also good, but only if you install the patches.
the 3 check-out feature is also pretty annoying.
it is great to use in college to record speeches made by proffessors, etc; but it takes some time to get them on a computer with an analog cable.

I have had this beauty for 24 hours and I love it. Even a non-techie like myself found it easy to set up and the Jukebox is a cinch to operate. Sound is fantastic, but do yourselves a favour and buy a set of Sony MDR EX70 headphones for a true sound experience.
However, the jukebox will not allow you to record every CD track because of 'copyright' issues. Despite the fact that downloading music from the web is illegal, it can be a much easier way of dowloading tracks. Oh, and converting mp3's to the ATRACK (sic) format takes a long time, but you could set up a list to convert and watch TV in the meantime.
And I am no longer stuck with big handbags to carry around a bulky personal CD player!

wow what a great little bit of kit, great sound, easy to use software (although you can't rush it)converts my large collection of mp3's to a lower spec but you lose no quality in sound, bass is really good making other mp3 players suck. and the bonus is you can re-write to the same disc over and over. brilliant!

I bought my 707 a few months back and i am very happy with it. you do need a pc though if you are to maximise its potential, the moving of tracks editing and labeling are a breeze and the software loaded in minutes. the sound quality is great even in lp4, you can fit loads of sond on one cd. BTW if you intend to but a dictation machine - dont this is great substitute and you can store and lable as you go along. only snag is that there is no digital line out to connect to a hi fi and the display is not backlighted. due to be replaced this month so look for bargins.
