Like the previous two reviewers, I also had my nice shiny MZ-N1 conk out and die just after the warranty expired. I was perfectly happy with it for the first year, but then it began to be unable to play certain discs. Now it can play about two tracks from one disc, and blanks out all the others. At first I thought, despite keeping it safe and cushioned inside a pouch, maybe I somehow had knocked it against something by accident. After reading the reviews here and elsewhere, however, I realize it's a common failure and Sony sucks. It's really frustrating to know that I shelled out all that money for a shoddy temporary piece of eye candy.

I bought the MZ-N1 for almost £260 a year and a half ago expecting the great performance and reliability I have always come to expect from Sony. Little was I to know that this purchase would turn me off Sony for ever. My MZ-N1 worked great until it was about 14 months old and the recording laser decided to stop working even after taking great care of thi MZ-N1. Luckily being in the EU I am entitled to a 2 Year Warranty, "whatever they say in the manual" I was able to "force" Sony to repair it free of charge.
If this was an isolated incident I would put it down to bad luck but its not isolated as it seems to be a common fault with the MZ-N1, usually occuring just after the warranty runs out.
This incident with sony and their insistence on destroying the entertainment world(in a microsoft fasion) with their highly restrictive copyright protection has put me off sony for good.

I wish i had seen these comments before i bought product last year. I too have a problem in that it will not record at all now. This is about a month after warranty runs out!!

This is my first review on amazon after buying countless products from them. The reason that this is my first is that I, like many people have been disapointed by this product.
After doing some research on mini disc players and looking at all the viable options and manufacturers just over a year ago I decided to spend my money on this product.
At the beginning I was extremely pleased with the mini disc, the appearance, weight and overall build quality was excellent and the added net software made recording much quicker than any previous mini disc players I had used. Just a week after the warranty ran out I found that I am also having problems with the mini disc playing and recording discs, even clearing some of the LP2 discs I had recorded.
Is it a risk worth taking for such a large amount of money? If the risk pays off I am sure you will be pleased, if it doesnt you will be left with a near useless but very expensive piece of equipment like myself and many other people who bought this product...

This is lots of fun until it breaks. I agree with another reviewer that Sony appear to be producing disposable products that will last until the warranty runs out. Mine is 3 months outside the warranty & surprise it had developed a problem with recording, struggling to advance the disk and worse will play some disks but randomly blanks out others. This has happened to me before with other Sony top of the range portable audio products eg two MZ-50s & a D-100 DAT player. I for one will not be buying Sony again until they improve unit life expectancy. My retailer said they could not offer me their standard 2 year extended warranty on this product. I now know why.
