Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - newgame, new style
Although this game has many new features, the concept is the same. Spend hundreds of hours walking around looking for genetic mutants otherwise known as pokemon. Some of the new ideas are great, such as the 2 on 2 battling, but others are just wierd, like the Berry Smoothies. All in all, it is a great new version, but that is all it is; a new version of a very old game. I think the people at nintendo would be better to spend their time looking for great NEW ideas rather than wasting it on relaunching this, because frankly I'm bored of it.

If you are devoted to the wierd little monsters though, you'll love it! The game is played in a new world of Hoenn and even though it is hard to say the name it is still fun to explore. Only a quarter of the original pokemon still exist in ruby and sapphire and this makes the game more interesting. When you're in the grass looking for pokemon, instead of finding something and knowing it was likely to be a pidgey or a rattata you have no idea what will pop up. And if you do well, you see yourself on the TV! I like it!

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - not really for 3 year olds
bought game on line, really because of all the hype and my four year old son loves his pokemon stacks. dissapointed once recieved as he like i said is only four and yet although the game is advertised as 3+ is clearly not, lots of words throughout even the first few bits of game, he was getting more and more upset as we tried to play it together. had game included some indication of what it contained i may have been able to turn him away from it, like i said a little more than dissapointed, sure older kids will think its great

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Gotta Catch 'Em All.... Again
From the moment you recieve this product you can tell it is going to be good. The packaging is even different to that of other games so you know you've bought something special. The box for this game is a shiny, holographic blue colour. Inside the box, you will find your game cartridge which a translucent blue colour instead of your ordinary black cart. Assuming that the European version is the same as the American, you should also find a trading card in your box which is compatible with the swipe-card-thingy which we should be able to get over here soon.
The graphics in this game are fantastic. They exploit the game boy advance's ability to use hungreds of colours, and in the ruby and sapphire, the once round little people from red and blue versions are now slightly more corectly proportioned; their heads being ever so slightly smaller than the rest of the body. However, you are limited to walking around in the square grid fashion, walking directly vertical or horizontal across the screen. The audio is also very nice.
The gameplay has much in common with that of the previous games, however it remains to be as addictive as ever with a total of 381 pokémon. There is one drawback however, these games are not backward compatible with previous games, and in total there are only about 180 pokémon you can catch/trade with ruby. I would assume that more will be available via the swipy-card-thing later on. These games however only have 8 gym badges to collect unlike the 16 in the previous gold/silver/crystal versions, making the lifespan of these games a little shorter.
Overall, this is a very pleasing game and I would recommend it to any fan of the franchise. If you have not yet had a taste of the phenomenon which is Pokémon, you must have been locked in a cupboard for the past 4 years, give it a try.
9/10

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Nintendo do it again by giving life to a dated franchise
This game is magnificent from the moment you frantically punch the cart furmly into your gameboy advance to the hundreds of attemps to catch those ledgendary pokemon. What ever you do it feels amazing.
The graphics in this game are much better but still not spectacular. The sound is familiar but thats why I love it. The familiarity. I know I've seen it before but this is different in many ways.

The main critisism of the game is the fact that you cant trade from the former six games. I say WHO CARES these games are seperate with new pokemon to experiment with and train. If I could have traded with the other six I would have had a killer squad. But I wouldn't have experienced the joy of the dazzling new moves and the tingle when a well trained pokemon evolves into a more amazing and powerful being.
Added to this is the fact that at the moment you can only find a small few of the old pokemon, I think its around thirty but im not sure as I couldn't care at the moment about the old ones when I still havent got all the new ones (lucily pikachu is still available but harder to catch) I say that there not available yet because nintedo keep hinting at a later adaptation that will allow you catch the older pokemon. So hopefully theres no need to fret if you miss your favourite pokemon that you trained for weeks when you played the red version as they will probably be available soon.

All in all this game is an entirley different experience of pokemon and gives the franchise a very nice rebirth but with the similarity of the graphics and sound.

If it sounds like something you would like then prorder it now as I'll be shocked if the stock doesn't run out before the 17th July

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Read this review for an honest, helpful opinion
This game is by far the best Pokemon game yet, however there are a few minor things you should knoa about it:

The Goods:
*100 new Pokemon to catch
*Impressive graphics, although still uses the square-by-square grid for movement
*Great 2 on 2 battles
*Enter your Pokemon into contests in Cool, Cute, Smart, Tough and Beauty categories.
*Make a secret base to hang out in
*Mixing records with another person allows you to see their Secret Base and their Television reports.
*Have interwiews from various people who broadcast them on TV
*Plant berries all over Hoenn and even make your own little berry farm!

The Bads:
*The classic Bug Catching Contest has gone
*Even though there are 100 new pokemon, 150 of the older pokemon are completely missing
*You can't travel to Johto OR Kanto after defeating the Elite Four
*In order to get the full potential from the game you need an E-reader (later to be released in England) and a link cable with a friend who has the other game.

Overall: It's excellent if you have all the right equipment, but after you defeat the Elite Four, without th extra equipment you can get quite easily tired of playing it.

Time it took for me to complete game: 3 weeks (of more-or-less non-stop play)
