Video Games : Saga Frontier 2

- Much overlooked classic
SaGa Frontier 2 is and RPG that i feel has never garnered the recognition that it deserves. I read a lot of articles about it which rated it as 'average', a mere bank balance-builder for Square in view of the Final Fantasy X project.
Those articles were wrong.
As with previous (so far unreleased) offerings from the SaGa franchise, SaGa Frontier 2 allows the player to follow the adventures of more than one character throughout the game. This gives it a greater replayability value than other more linear RPG's but also allows the player to tackle the game and discover different facets of the storyline, some being unique to one scenario.
The graphics admittedly are beginning to show their age but with the use of vibrant colour and beautifully constructed pre-rendered backdrops, SaGa Frontier 2, despite its' age, still manages to present a polished and extremely detailed graphic interface for the player.
The story is also one of the more interesting I have encountered in an RPG with one element running central through the narrative of both characters (one an Anima-less prince battling against his father's rejection and the other an Indiana Jones style treasure hunter.) Early on in the story, a powerful and mysterious relic called the Egg surfaces and eventually it becomes a battle against this Quell (powerful magic artifacts) and the evil it is unleashing.
The skill system is also more developed than that found in other contemporary RPG's and in most cases, the player can choose to battle his or her opponents as a team or using a single character. Using option 2 and entering a one-on-one duel will leave you in a very short space of time with exceptionally powerful characters (which is good as the final battle was one of the hardest I have ever fought)
Adding to the sumptuous pre-rendered backgrounds and the involving gameplay is one of the most atmospheric soundtracks ever to grace an RPG and gives SaGa Frontier 2 that little extra dose of polishing that makes it the truly unforgettable experience that it is.
Since it is getting harder to get a hold of, I would recommend anybody who enjoys a time consuming, well laid out RPG to buy this game. It truly does deserve five stars if not more.
One of the best RPG's I have ever played and certainly up there with such titans as Final Fantasy VII.
