- Not a hard drive player
If you want a hard drive with 1000s of songs, this isn't for you. It can hold 80 minutes of music, or on low quality 320 minutes of music, which is far below that of hard drive players. The MZN 910 is the top of the line portable MD recorder and I've loved using it. The battery life is absolutely supreme (I've easily got a months worth of listening from the rechargable batter at approx 2 hours a day), the remote control a complete joy to use and the design also very chic.
The MD format is also extremely versatile. You can record using this unit from all types of sound sources, whether they be CD players, computers or even TVs. All you need is an appropriate analogue or optical (digital lead). They also have the ability to record from mics, so recording a live gig you recently attended is possible.
But I'll only give it 3 stars.
The NetMD feature is appalling. The sonicstage software is unusable, although people have found a workaround to the 3 check in/out system for MP3s, which is ridiculous. You may also want to wait another few months for the next generation of Minidiscs to come out, and they can hold 8 hours of music on one disc.
The other negative concerns the output level. Due to a European law, the output level on this player is only 4.5mw. That is low compared to some of the older MD units I own. A great buy, but wait for Hi-MD which should blow this model away.

I was going to buy an MP3 player or a minidisc, but after alot of hunting around decided to go for this minidisc. It's really compact and has some really good features. You are able to store around 4 to 5 albums on an 80min disc with the ATRAC3, so at least you can record delete etc whenever you want, you can download music from so many sources aswell. Not being particularly technically minded I still haven't even used half the functions on the minidisc player. I have used it regularly at the gym and when travelling etc and so far I am really impressed and pleased I went for this one over others and definately not fussed about the mp3 players after buying this.
Rating: - Watch out for buying spares
The rest of the reviews of this minidisc player are fairly comprehensive so no need to repeat them again. I just wanted to warn you not to lose the small plastic clip on the remote control (it fell off my remote from just casual use) as Sony will try to charge you 17 pounds for a new one - which seems a lot to me for a small piece of plastic just 3 cm by 0.5 cm. I found it an interesting piece of post-sales service from a company that is trying to compete with the likes of Apple as it loses market share...
I'm also lead to believe you might need to remortgage your house if you actually break/lose the remote itself.

This is the first MD i have owned and im very very pleased. Probably one the most expensive single items i have bought being a student, but well worth it. The supplied software is a waste of time except for putting songs in groups, it is a lot of hassle for just transfering songs (also crashes) and i tend to use real one player instead. i cant fault the sound quality even with the normal cheap in-ear phones provided. Basically it does everything it says it does. The only small problem i have is that there is a limit on the number of characters you can use for song / album / artist names on each disk and if you have many small sized tracks it is easy to run out and be left with unnamed tracks. Finishing on a good note, the remote is very useful with the backlit display and i have only used the controls on the actual player once or twice!

I recieved this as a christmas present, and upon opening the box I was immediately wowed! My first impressions were of a sleek, silver, lightweight, gorgeous gadget. Unfortuantely, these first impressions were marred by the fact that the bundled software, Sonic Stage did not work on my computer.
Having never owned an MD before all the controls and functions were completely alien to me, and the enclosed manual is scarily thick. However, after a few minutes all the controls were fairly intuitive and easy to use.
My major problem arose when installing the software, Sonic Stage. The install went smoothly (it requires 120MB!), and when I plugged my MD into the computer it was all recognised. However, it all went pear-shaped after that.
Sonic Stage can allegedly convert MP3 to ATRAC (Sony specific format). Fortunately, after a trawl of the internet I discovered that with an up-to-date version of Real Player, you can download a plugin for Sony devices, which I duly did.
From then on, I was all smiles again. Real Player did the job adequately (some quirks, but restarting usually sorts them), and doesn't have the annoying check-in, check-out feature of the official Sonic Stage software. The only slight downside is that so far I haven't worked out if Real Player can convert MP3 to ATRAC so I am having to rerip things.
Other (very small) niggles are that the jog dial on the player is a bit fiddly to use as is the 5-way control key.
So, in conclusion, a really great product that I would heartily recommend, let down by the provided software (to which there are very few alternatives, I could only find one, as both NetMD, and ATRAC are Sony specific).
