- Worth the wait...
Well, I've been waiting for this to turn up for ages, and it finally dropped on the mat on Saturday morning as I was on my way out to my mother-in-laws 60th birthday party....noooooooooooooo.....all day I had to spend couped up eating cake, being polite to relatives etc. knowing that DD was there waiting at home.
Having now spent the remaining hours of the weekend playing it, I can definitely say it is worth the wait. What's it like? Well, it's like Mario Kart of course! And that is exactly what we all wanted, isn't it?
The improvements are subtle yet worthwhile - improved graphics etc. The handling of the karts is superb, and playing around with the character/kart combos gives endless possibilities. There is nothing else in life quite as satisfying as power-sliding around a 180 degree hairpin, preferably knocking off a quick red shell in the process.
Make no doubt, I've loved every minute of this game so far, and I haven't even got onto multi-player yet! However, I do have a couple of concerns. First, I'm worried about how long the single-player appeal will last. I'd managed to win gold on all but 150cc star cup after only a couple of hours playing (of course, I've spent many an hour on previous versions of the game, so I'm pretty good.) That said, I haven't finished yet and I'm sure I have more to unlock. Only time will tell on that one. My other moan is about the use of the Z button to swap characters. To me, that button is the only fault of the cube, and it's use during high speed shenanigans can be tricky (I constantly keep firing power-ups when trying to switch drivers and vice-versa.) I'm sure I'll get used to it, though.
But forget those worries, this is still brilliant and a must-have, whether you're new to Mario or a karting die-hard.

TYPICALLY MARIO KART HAS ALWAYS BEEN A FLAGSHIP GAME ON EVERY NINTENDO PLATFORM, DOUBLE DASH IS NO EXCEPTION TO THIS RULE. THIS VERSION OF MARIO KART CAN BEST BE DESCRIBED AS INSANE! A LOT HARDER, AND TWICE AS INTENSE, WHETHER PLAYING BY YOURSELF OR WITH FRIENDS THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE STUNNER OF A GAME. PERSONALLY SATURDAY NIGHTS ALWAYS BEGIN, DRINKING AND PLAYING MK 64 (PLAYIN HALF CUT IS DEFINALTY THE BEST WAY TO PLAY). THIS PASSED SATURDAY THE SCREAMIN WAS LOUDER AND MY MATES WHINGIN WAS TWICE AS BAD!

- Rubbish if you have no friends.....
I bought it for a bit of one player and two player action, with a bit of 3 player when my friend pops over or borther at xmas. However I was SO dissappointed. I mean, where are the tracks?! You get bored of the current ones overnight, and two player is limited fun. I bought it on saturday, and on top of playing it two player most of the weekend ive still got 2 cups to go and ive completed it - great! NOT. IVe forked out £40 for two days playing :(
Avoid unless your at uni and have a massive screen or multiple cubes cos you really wont get anything out of it unless your on 4 player mode. What a shame, woulda been good with 10 more tracks...

Having been waiting for this game for many months, I expected a lot from it, maybe too much. The game delivers great 2-4 player kart racing but fails in two main areas. Single player mode is really easy and gets boring after not too long, so unless you have people to play with you will get bored fast. 2-4 player vs mode and grand prix mode is fun but the fact that there are only 12 tracks in total is very dissapointing. I feel nintendo could have at least put another 4 tracks on under another grand prix. Overall good fun but a little dissapointing.

After playing Mario Kart Double Dash for a few days, I have already got through 3/4 of the entire game. There are many aspects that I am not impressed with at all.
On the plus side, the gameplay is good, as are the graphics, but it sports none of the hour on hour muliplayer action that the 64 version had. The circuits seem too short and boring, without many short cuts which made the 64 version more exciting.
One of the worst things is the constant drone from the carts which makes them sound slow and a struggle to work with. The most annoying feature however is the control of the carts. They are bordering on unpredictable and undrivable, to the point that a slight tilt of the control stict in one direction, sends you in the complete opposite. This means that more drastic turns are necessary which takes all precision driving, evident in the 64 version, out of the equation. You can't even dodge out the way of an obstacle without using half the width of the circuit.
I was hoping that the gamecube version of mariokart was going to be a step ahead, but in my opinion has failed to better the 64 version. And has been the only let down of all gamecube releases that I have purchased.
Its lucky to get 3 stars.
