Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Mario Kart Double Dash
Although I don't actually own this game I can say I've played it a few times and have enjoyed it. This is a classic, if you liked Mario Kart for the SNES you'll love this. It has new tracks, characters, karts and a great new two persons in one kart feature which makes it even more fun. You can also play with up to 4 players so its alot of fun when you have friends or family round. The fun never stops with this game, its one of those never get bored of easily type games which is always good. For those fans of Mario games or just fun racing games, you should get this.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Double the fun for your £!
Having been a Karter since the NES days, I awaited the new Mario Kart with some trepidation. Although good, the N64 version wasn't up to scratch and had left a blot on the Nintendo score sheet, so this version had everything to play for.
I will start with the only down point: you are now unable to hop to avoid incoming weapons at the last minute. To start with this was quite a shock, but having played it since December I have found that Nintendo have included the ability to dodge shells/eggs etc used a certain skid combination. But I won't spoil it by telling you how.
The good points; everything else. The tracks are all great with lovely touches throughout. The two characters on the Kart idea is brilliant and it is now hard to imagine playing it with just one person!
As ever, MarioKart really comes in to its own on 2 player mode whether it be racing/co-op/battle mode.
The Gamecube really is a bargain and MarioKart has made it the standout console. While Playstation2 starts to look its age, the Gamecube is just only just coming of age.
As with all Nintendo products there are loads of things to unlock, including a wonderful set of new tracks!
If you've got the money, get this!
Simple.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Fun gaming at its best
The ultimate party game, Mario Kart, finally receives its Gamecube update. Everything that you love about the series is here in full Gamecube glory, once again you can race round with your favourite characters chucking red shells, littering the tracks with bananas as you pelt through the classic Mushroom, Flower, Star and Special cups. All you would expect is there. But we're a much more demanding audience nowadays, we want a little more from our updates, and Nintendo have been responding to this with their recent games. This time round, you don't find just one character at the wheel of a kart, but one at the front driving and one at the back throwing the weapons around. It adds a whole new tactic to the game, if you are in 1st and you have one character pick up a red shell, then swap him over into the drivers seat and give the other character a chance to grab something like a banana. You can control both people in the kart or have a friend sit in with you, do you let your mate do the difficult cornering while you punch other karts that are trying to overtake you? got something that could help as an item and you're driving? pass it to the person on the back and they can let rip! This new co-operative spin on the game adds an entirely new dimention to the franchise. Rather than trying to batter your mate in a 1 on 1, you find yourself teaming up, trying to whomp the computer.

The Mario world looks better than ever in this rendition of the game, Chomps by the side of the track strain to try and knock you over, giant dinasaurs provide huge hulking obstacles, deadly whirlwind litter the Dry Dry Desert stage, and your mouth will drop open the first time you're fired up the mountain on DK's Mountain course. Rainbow Road is always there at the end of the game in its technicolour glory, and its still as nasty as ever! Everything is bright and vivid as you try and race round the course to place an elusive 1st. To help you in your aim, item boxes are scattered round, pick ups vary from the classic heat seeking shells, to mushroom turbo boosts, to the 'everyone is small' lightning bolt, this time round, however, each character has individual skills to make things a bit more interesting. Baby Mario and Luigi can get pull round the course by a huge chomp on a chain, knocking all others out the way. Bowser and son have the BIGGEST green shell ever. Daisy and Peach have protective hearts to surround the kart. With each character having a unique weight rating which determines what kind of kart you race in, it really does make your choice of character vital to match your racing style. Do you have tiny Koopa and Diddy Kong with shells and a huge banana as your special skills and have a nice light kart with quick accelleration? What about fat old Wario with his bombs with Mario and his 5 fireball attack in a heavy kart which can reach high top speeds? Its all up to you. These choices keep the game fresh and more varied.

Winning cups on this game unlocks newer karts, new characters to play with and new levels for Grand Prix and Battle modes. It feels like there is more to race for than just a virtual cup this time round. The game comes into its element when you have more than one person, stick 4 people round a Gamecube, or 8 round 2 Gamecubes via lan link up and the hilarity never ends. Battle mode sees you trying to burst each others balloons as per usual, but now Shine Thief (a capture the flag game) and Bob-omb Blast adds a few new gameplay twists to the mutilplayer mode. Of course you can just race each other to death in GP mode.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Will Nintendo Ever Learn From the SNES Version?
I would say the two best ever nintendo racing games are Diddy Kong Racing (N64) and Super Mario Kart (SNES). What did these 2 games have in common? Simplicity. The tracks were short, concentrating on hidden shortcuts and corners you could master on your 5th try. Mario Kart Double Dash does not live up to these 2 games. I feel it resembles Mario Kart 64 in terms of lengthly over-complicated tracks, and just like the N64 version, weapons such as the mushroom are no longer as effective as they were on the SNES version. But where this game lacks in racing it makes up for in battle mode, games such as 'shine theif' are addictive with friends. The whole 2-players-to-a-kart concept is a good idea, though the Karts seem to have gotten a little to big and strange looking. If your not into sharing a kart you can always take charge of both characters on your own. The main advantage of 2 players to a kart is that if you're one of 3 siblings like me, you can have a great game against each other with only 2 split screens. The controls are a let down as gone are the little hop jumps, and the only way to turn a corner seems to be to skid round it, there's no way of sharply turning which is very annoying!
All in all this game is good fun, but the best bits are for those who have friends, as the game really only comes into its own in multiplayer mode.
Better than Mario Kart 64, worse than Super Mario Kart...

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A game that has a hidden agenda...
I bought this game basically off the reputation of the original SNES. The original in my eyes is still the greatest game conceived. Sinlge player is fun, as you scream at the screen cos as you were about to cross the line, a computer character hits you hard with a red-homing-missle-shell and takes the victory. Indeed, the sheer determination you need to win this game, and also the underhand tactics, the treachery, add to a great feeling when you finally win a race or championship. Multi-player is the best thing on this game. The gamecubes advantage of 4 controller ports to other consoles 2, gives you an ideal time to showcase all you learnt. Continue with the tactics, the downright violence and evil thoughts to blow your friends off the track, who stand in the way of victory! This truly is a great game, and that says a lot from someone who has been off the game network for a few years. Not many games hold my attention for more than 10 minutes. This game does easily. I can't emphasise how much fun it brings to me and my fellow student friends. Buy it now, regardless of whether you like racing games or not, because the social interaction is worth the money itself.
