Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - The series that just gets better (stuff the driving stages!)
All said and done the actual format of the THPS games can never change that much, they are limited to the confines of a skateboard afterall, However, Activision (the team behind the games) always manages to give each competitor in the series a fresh outlook. This might be new tricks, hidden unlockables, more levels, skaters etc. This time around they have really gone all out on changing the format.

Gone is the standard level to level progression you have come to expect so now enters the all new "story mode". Story mode had been billed by Activision as the biggest breakthrough since GTA went 3D, mmmmmm maybe not, it does manage to boot the old format up the behind enough for things to change enough to make it fresh though and for me that is enough. The best thing to do is to ignore the hype about the big changes and to take it as a new THPS game with some nice fresh features.

Other additions include the ability to hop off your board and run jump etc. There is little use to implement this feature, in a normal situation but it is a brilliant touch to combos whereby mid combo you can jump off your board and change direction as alittle meter countsdown and providing your back onboard before the couter runs out you can continue the combo. This is a brilliant feature and possibly one of the best of the series. Most peoples main hang up is the driving in the game, I can't see the big deal, yeah its a bit crap but it doesn't feature heavily in the game and you don't have to use it in any other part other thatn the story so ignore it.

The customisation elements as been considerably upped, the create a skater/park options have once again been increased and create a deck/trick have been included these are fun and welcome additions.

Other elements of the game that have been changed are the music of which there is twice as much as THPS4, it is divided into punk, hip-hop and rock and the overall playlist is fully customisable. The levels are dramatically bigger with hidden spots the graphics are tighter with the exception of character models which look abit odd close up.

Overalll then THUG is a welcome addition to thw series which implements the tried and tested formula everyone loves which would be enough to warrant a purchase as well as some new features of which some are implemented well and others not so, but when it comes down to it it doesn't really matter because the basic gameplay is already great. If you haven't got any of the series get it and if you have them all and played them to death get it but if you have one a didn't like it that much this probably hasn't changed enough for you to start liking the series.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Another triumph for Birdman
I love the Tony Hawk's series, and this game doesn't make me want to stop! It is brilliant, the levels are much better, and interactive. The graphics are good, and as usual, the music is spot on! the sound track is defineatley a highlight of the game. It includes: the Clash, Queens of the stone age, Bad religion, the Hellacopters, Super joint ritual, and 3 (3!!) tracks by Kiss (as well as a Kiss themed level, and Gene Simons as a bonus skater, quite a treat for kiss fans, then!). The game is much more realistic (you can get of your board!), and for the first time ever, features a plot (story mode). The only let down of the game is: the driving parts. Where this should be the best new feature, it just isn't believable. Riddled with glitches, and ridiculously simple, I really hope it is improved for the next game. The create-a-trick feature is definately worth checking out, I have made more than a dozen tricks since I bought this game, and I still have plenty of ideas. Roll on T.H.U.G 2!!

P.S See if you can spot the Leeds United graffiti on the Manhattan level!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Activision have gone the distance this time!
Tony Hawk's games have always been the same. You are dropped in a themed level and you skate around doing different goals. It started to change though when in Tony Hawks 4, instead of having a 2 minute time limit to do a set number of goals, you had as much time as you wanted to skate around then you could, in your own time find someone who gave you an objective. This really brought a whole new dimension to the Tony Hawk's saga.

ENTER: Tony Hawks Underground

This game is an even bigger change from the last one. In fact the only real similarity is that you have to skate in a career mode....but no.....you don't even have to skate anymore. You can get off your board at will and climb up buildings to find new areas. Also, they've scrapped the career mode and replaced it with a story mode where you make your way through the ranks to become a pro with just your friend Eric.

So how do these changes fair up.
Well getting off your board is quite handy as you can keep your combo going for a few seconds off your board while you find a new object to trick on or build up your speed for a ramp. They have intreduced cars too but they handle badly and would've been better left out. The story mode is nice as well with 27 chapters linking together between levels. It is a nice new initiative and the story has many turns to it; complete with big tournaments to compete in.

The tricks are mainly the same with the addition of getting off your board, and hip transfers which are spine transfers on a 90 degree turn. A nice part is that like with manuals on THPS4 you can change grinds without having to jump and the same with lip tricks.

The usual create-a-skater is back , but this time you need it for story mode as you cannot be a pro this time around. Create a level is there, but this time you can create your own goals and gaps so it is like having a completely new level which you can trade with your mates. Create a trick is interesting letting you link all real grabs, flips and spins to make your own unique trick.

The music is as always good with plenty of tracks to groove to, and they don't get too repetitive. The skating sounds and voices are also quite impressive.

There are difficulty levels, 4 in total, but the bottom difficulty takes the mick. Vetetrans should go straight on the top one, SICK, and most others on NORMAL. Normal took me a couple of weeks but sick longer so there's a bit of a lifespan there, not as long as THPS4 but that was just jam-packed.

So overall this is a good game. The cars hold it back a bit but there a a few nice unlockables which keep you wanting to complete every last goal and difficulty. Definitely one for the Tony Hawks fan and even for some newbies.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The series keeps getting better
THUG is the best yet as it mixes old with new. when i played it for the first time i was amazed it still as good as ever if not better. The ability to create your own tricks and decks is a great idea. the driving sections however are a bit of a let down but are fun none the less.
