Rating:
- A Massively Magical Online Role Playing GameI've always been a great fan of the Warcraft series of games, and I wasn't disappointed when Blizzard finally released the World of Warcraft - their Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG). If you've never played a MMORPG before - you're in for a treat. Unlike many solo computer games, where you are pitted primarily against the game AI, in the MMORPG - as the name suggests - you team up with other players online to complete quests or do battle with opposing factions in Blizzard's magical realm of Azeroth. And what a world it is! A gigantic warcraft universe of Elven forests and Undead dungeons; of Dwarven halls and Orc cities. And of course - there be dragons. The landscapes are beautifully crafted and rendered, blending seamlessly from one region to another. You'll want to ride for hours on the back of a Griffin just to admire the view as you wing your way high above snow covered landscapes and volcanic chasms. But if the scenery doesn't grab you, then some surly Orc probably will. For this is Warcraft and you must choose a side - Horde or Alliance. There's dragons to slay, Orcs to bash and cheap beer to be had at the Pig and Whistle, Stormwind, should you tire of questing and just want to point and laugh at the Elves with friends over a pint. I've been playing the game for some time now and it has never failed to keep me entertained. My first and favorite character is a human Alliance Mage of Stormwind that has reached the grand level of 60. But I've created many other alternate characters (alts) on different servers, of different factions, races and class; the combinations are numerous with each character having to be played a different way, learning different skills and completing different quests. There are still combinations I have yet to try. So, if you are thinking to try the game there are a few things to consider: there is no standalone version - no Internet connection, no game. In addition, after the trial period has ended, you must pay a monthly fee to continue to play. If these two things are not an obstacle, then you only have the final issue of occasionally leaving the land of Azeroth and returning to the real world where the day-to-day problems are more mundane. For the Alliance! Rating: - GREATSo, World of Warcraft... is it a great game you can spend days, weeks, months and even years on? The answer lies somewhere in between. I've had some really really great times playing wow and I've had some really really boring moments. The secret to loving WoW is to keep it somewhat at bay, do not let it ruin your life. I admit there were some weeks and even months where I did nothing but play WoW. And because of that I got so sick of it I hated myself when I was playing. WoW is highly addictive and it can consume you. I have friends who have done nothing but play WoW for over a year. 10+ hours of gaming every day of the week. I know for a fact that for lots and lots of people this is what they do. You always want that next thing which is slightly better than the one you've already got. You want to see your character looking all hot and being able to churn out lots of damage or keep the members in your party alive so you can prevail and yell "Victory!". I've had many great times and met a lot of great people during my time in Azeroth and Kalimdor. I started out as Horde and it'll always be dear to me to see trolls, taurens, undead and fellow orcs. But this game takes its toll. You have to decide on how much time you want to spend on it. Level 1 to 60 is great for casual gamers who play some hours a day a few days of the week. And then when you hit level 60 you can just chill out and do the 5-10 man instances for the best and nicest blue gear possible from them, and have a hell of a good time doing it with good friends. But after you've done all that you have three choices. Option 1: Continue with that character and get him/her in a raiding guild to do some ZG/MC/BWL/AQ/Naxx and outdoor bosses. But this is not for everyone. Here you have to spend about 5 hours on each raid night and often several days of the week. And few people will not see the valid logical reasons for this. There must be a better way to spend your real life time on. Option 2: You continue playing but on another character. Either you want to try out the opposite faction or just another class so you can experience the game from a different point of view. Downside here is that the game won't feel as fresh as before and leveling can become a bit boring as you've done most of the quest before. Option 3: Simple. You logout and cancel your subscription and you quit playing WoW. Here you say to yourself, it was a great game and fun while it lasted. But it's time to move on. World of Warcraft is a great game if you can manage to control your game time. You meet great people and it's fun to see your character getting stronger and wiser. But after a while (after level 60 sometime) you find yourself at a crossroad. It's up to you which road you want to follow. Rating: - Time consuming but great...I've had World of Warcraft since a couple of months after it's release(late in writing a review, i know.) and i am still playing it now. For those of you who are new to mmorpg's(massively multiplayer online roleplaying games), this game might not be the best introduction. However it is better for new players than many games out there. Guild Wars was my first mmorpg experience(i have tried many others aside from World of Warcraft and Guild Wars) and i have to say i found it early on to be more forgiving and easier to enter for new players. World of Warcraft on the other hand, once you have some experience in playing mmorpg's is far more rewarding. This said, World of Warcraft isn't difficult to get to grips with, but if you plan to ask other players for advice in the chat channels rather than discover for yourself then i recommend playing the Horde faction. Horde players are often older, more mature and alot more generous and friendly than Alliance players. The are many players, generally younger ones, who are rude, selfish and generally obnoxious. But on the other side there are also many friendly, helpful and genuinely kind individuals. Graphically the game is good, especially once you get into the expansion given areas if you so choose to purchase it. Do bare in mind that as a game which is a few years old, it's graphics aren't quite state of the art anymore. The graphics do also bare a slight cartoony feel which may not be to everyones taste. The sound is good and well implemented, it does however feel a touch repetative in places and the messages the characters say when you try to use an ability but don't have the energy/rage/mana can get annoying, especially if you're feeling lazy and just hit the button repeatedly whilst waiting for them to regenerate. Gameplay wise the game is very good, especially after the most recent patches which make leveling easier by increasing experience gain from quests and reducing amounts needed overall. You may find repetativness in some areas with the kinds of quests you are asked to do, kill x number of this, collect x number of these are the norm. Dungeons or instances as you will come to call them once you begin playing are both imo one of the best and one of the worst things about the game. In order to get the best items, you really need to do instances eventually progressing ro raids(bigger, harder instances with greater numbers of players in a team). The drop rate on items in instances and the larger raids, leave alot to be desired. You can find yourself doing an instance a dozen times and never getting the specific item you want from a boss there, simply because it either didn't drop or when it did somebody else who needed it beat you on the dice roll. This said, most people do tend to manage to get the items they want, in the normal instances at least. Either from going with lots of pugs(pick up groups, groups of random players), or with friends/guild members. To conclude, if you want to get the most out of this game it is a time consuming process and be prepared to invest many, many hours in order to reach maximum level and also get the items you want. The game however is rewarding and mostly entertaining, you can also meet some truely wonderful people playing(i myself have already made some very close friendships thanks to this game) provided you are willing to tolerate the... not so wonderful, to put it politely. The fact i am still playing this game after several years speaks well for not only the game, but for many of those playing it whom i have met. Hope this review has helped. :) Rating: - It's just greatIts a great game, simple as that. But if you have no self control, i would advise you don't buy it. It is so easy to loose an entire day to this game, although it can become slightly tedious there is just something that makes you want to load it up time after time. If you are able to manage the time you spend playing then this is an incredible game, theres no doubting that, but don't loose your life to it... Rating: - A HIGHLY addictive gameI bought this game almost three years ago and have only stopped playing on it a few weeks ago if your looking for a game worth the money of a tenner a month then this is it. I wasn't really a fan of of MMORPG before and i only got it cause a mate bought it for me for my birthday but once i started playing i couldn't stop. This game is definitely worth the money but its extremely time consuming. Its constantly being updated with new things and when you think you have done it all something else comes along and you have to do that. A masterpiece of a game but so addicting |
