Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Good
I have to say that as a big FF fan I was a little wary of this game, however I am glad I decided to try it. It is an incredibly fun game to play with a really good story behind it. I love how it has managed to combine sci fi with the traditional fantasy elements of people driving around by horse and carriage, fighting with a sword and of course, dragons (what's fantasy without dragons right? :-P )

I do have one slight criticism. The music is great, but very often when there is a cut scene where the characters speak the music quite often drowns them out, and there is no option to either turn down the music or turn up the voices. This can get quite frustrating especially since some of the voice acting is great. I especially like Cliff's "that hot chick over there" in a sly stallone kind of way when he and Fayt are in the dungeons at Airyglyph.

All in all a fun game to play with plenty to keep you occupied and an inventive battle system that is pretty fun though can take some getting used to when you're used to a turn based system. Definitely worth a try.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - One of the best RPG ever!!!
I am a huge Final Fantasy fan and loves RPG games. My first RGP experience was wizardry 6 which is about 15 years ago and I was probably first person to get FF7 when it comes out in the UK. I would like to point out STAR OCEAN 3 is one of the best RPG game ever not only because it is a fun game to play but how innovative is this RPG game bring out to the world that there will be a perfect RPG game produced in the very near future. (Might be FF13, but I doubt it).

I rate RPG game in five points: 1. storyline; 2. game play; 3. characters; 4. systems and 5 graphics. SO3 provides a very innovative and surreal storyline, somewhat unpredictable and link with some Valkyrie Profiles characters which are very cool and mystical. (Play the game until you meet Lenneth, which is one of the greatest RPG moments of my playing time). Characters are very interesting, each one of them has good story behind but some of the story are very weak. Funny enough they will be weak as their abilities as well. Each one of them will provide distinctive moves and abilities and combine their power you can create different teams to conquer the world. The battle system are great, I will say more in game play. Workshop is a bit if not very annoying at times and you can only perform synthesis on weapons. (What is that about anyway?) But if you bare the pain, the reward is great. The cut scenes are very long and annoying, but you have option to skip it, which is great. There are options to fight super bosses, getting super weapon and make you a god, which is very good. Battle trophy and difficulty level provides the replay value if you bother with it. Finally the game play, you can only control Fate running around and you cannot change to any other characters (except slight moment with Maria). Fate runs reasonably smoothly with good speed, so the massive map does not bother me so much. The greatest feat is the battle system, they have some amazing moves with some great excitement because of the damage output is so great that you are in awe compare with early in the game. 3D dimension battle make you to think about the area if your move is covering are very good feature that is why Diablo II is such a exciting game and SO3 actually implement that very well. Too bad the tracking of the chain moves are very frustrating. FF12 is actually tried to do the same thing, too bad the damage output of the magic and area attacks are so bad that most of the players just to set up the gambit and slash the monsters to death.

In my opinion, SO3 almost provide merit to all those points although not perfect and annoying at times. Still it is a lot of fun. The AI are very stupid, I think that is why FF12 introduce the gambit system to make AI very clever. I do not know what is this development will go. I hope a game is produced that it has a great story behind the game, with game play very close to Diablo and character skill development close to Ultima or Might and magic and flexible commands like FF7. No comments on graphics, I trust SquareEnix on this one, they are the experts in it.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - ...you can't knock them for trying I guess...
Star ocean...always trying to be as good as Final Fantasy. They tried and they definetely beat FF12. But this is NOT a final fantasy experience.

What you may notice is that the battle system isn't random. Now this non-random thing is pretty debatable because think of it this way: when it's random every now and then you would have to engage in battle no questions asked. In this game you have bump into your opponents before facing them, however most of the time the enemies are put into positions where it's impossible to get past them so it would make no difference whether or not it was random or noticable.

The battle system within the battles tries to be revolutionary by letting you move the characters close to the enemies and pressing buttons to use commands that you want. Although better than the gambit system in FF12 the only thing that's different to the ATB system is that you have to walk up to the enemies. Not revolutionary but a slight and unnoticable improvement.

The characters have their stories to tell but at points this could be irritating. The cutscenes are very very very very very very long. Some can be up to two hours and can be very tedious as they don't seem to have the RPG cutscene charm as much as other RPG games. But the characters are...intersting however you may never use some of the characters.

One of the most addictive parts of the game is the inventing system. Although simple this system allows you to invent, place patents, and become the top inventer as you watch your items being sold in the shop. However you need to pay alot of your money.

Buy this game if you're an RPG fan...if not you should buy something else.......God of War anyone?

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Definitely worth your while
As a huge Final Fantasy fan, I thought I'd give this game a try, and it didn't disappoint. Sure, this isn't the best RPG in existence, but it's still a lot of fun and definitely worth your money.
I found the characters in the game endearing and interesting, and the voice acting is very good, which is a relief seeing as that can often be a weak point in games. The soundtrack in general is pretty solid, with plenty of catchy tunes to be heard along the way. The graphics are also impressive, with lots of detailed scenery to admire and nicely designed characters and monsters.
The battle system gets a huge thumbs up from me, and makes a refreshing change from the often annoying random battles in many RPGs. Star Ocean shows a fun and successful alternative to this, and it's one of my favourite battle systems ever. You can even have a second player join in the fight, adding to the experience and overall a very good idea.
The storyline is also engaging and kept me interested all the way through, however I agree with someone else who said that it would've been nice to explore a wider variety of planets, as for most of the game you spend on just one. Still, the plot unfolds very nicely.
Overall, Star Ocean is a great game and RPG fans shouldn't pass it by. Non-rpg fans too can easily enjoy it I'm sure. Buy it! :-)

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Absolutely Flabbergasting...
this has to be one of my top 5 games ever created! The graphics are quite astounding to me, the gameplay is simple, there are so many things to see and do, this has kept me entertained for nearly a year now and I'm still not finished, simply because I'm doing everything I can NOT to finish!

once you complete the main game, you get another 2 dungeon type places to explore too, so really, its a huge game!

The only problem is the voice acting in it at times, and the frustration of having to find the right monster that provides the right materials and then fight them over and over...and over...and over...and over...and over until you actually get ONE set of materials...when you need on average about 7 or 8, maybe more!

it took 3 days for me to get that many

but otherwise, its absolutely flabbergasting, one of the greatest games ever!
