Video Games : Rise of Nations - Gold Edition (Mac)

- A really under-appreciated game
This games been out for a while now but i still love to spend an hour or two building or battling away either online or offline. When this game first came out hardly anyone knew about it, and thats most likely the reason why it hasn't t really took off.
The game-play is sharp and quick and, if you play it properly, you never have a moment where your waiting for your resources to fill up. There are a number of different things to do on RoN. You can decide to do a campaign and you are given an option to do campaigns like the cold war and alexander the great. Or you can just do conquer the world, pick a nation and take over the world your style. The take over the world campaign is much like risk where you have a large map of the world and the countries show who they are owned by, by there color. But when you attack an enemy country it becomes a map and you play it out to determine whether the country becomes yours or you get beaten. There are different maps to play depending on the country you attack and how well defended it is. For example there is a game called 'Tactics' which involves your army fighting an enemy army and then theres 'Barbarians' where you defend your settlement from barbarians, theres many more.
If campaign isn't what your looking for you can jump straight into a quick game in a map of your choice and if the maps supplied with the game are boring you (not that they will) you can use 'scenario editor' and make your own. If you feel like the AI are to easy, which if played on tough i doubt, you can test your skills online against people all over the world. The online is relatively easy just download game-ranger and join a game. My only criticism is at times there is a lack of games to join. But you soon forget about that when you storm across an enemys borders to find him in the medival age while your in modern.
To finish off i have to say this game is a serious MUST have. I personally am going to go play it online now, hope to see you online to soon!

you must get this game!!! it is a unique strategy game where u can advance throught the age get better troops as you go up to modern day. try out world campaign and conquer the world usein your army or just fart around on a single game and kill the computer either way this game is a exellent buy.

There are few games on the mac, so it is with great luck that we get this masterpiece. Those farmilliar with Risk or Total war series on the PC, will feel at home in the single player missions. You basically have a map of the work devided into territories, and each player takes it in turn to attack a neighbour. Thats when the fun begins.
Of the 2 types of RTS games (C&C/Age of Empires) this game follows the AOE resourse/building route. there are 5 resourses to collect. But the difference here is they are inexhaustable. This means once you set up your wood/food/metal collecting, there is nothing else to do but create an army bigger than your opponents.
Territory is an interesting addition to the RTS. Taken from the civilization series, your national borders give any friendly troop within certain bonuses, and any enemy troops attrition damage. I have to say, as unique as this feature is, it can be absolutly infuriating - sending in an army of 200 to an enemies territory, only to have them slowly die just because of the area they are walking in is utterly maddening. This is a minor gripe in a truly huge game.
Multiplayer is where this game excels. You can choose to play through the ages - 10 in total, or pick a single era in which to play. My favorite is the gunpowder age where things are nice and simple, but for those more adventurous, there is the modern age with nukes and all sorts of new ways to kill people.
At first, the game has so many things to learn, and it can almost be daunting. But after several games, somthing strange happens, and without knowing it, the resource collecting becomes second nature, and your mind is focused on stratagy - where to attack from, how to lay out your cities to be most defensable etc.
I love this game. Anyone who enjoyed AOF, Empire Earth, Warcraft, will love this game and be able to pick up the ropes fairly quickly.
Players who are new to the RTS genre, may face a slighly steeper learning curve
