This is far better than Madden NFL. I love that game and play Madden 08 all the time as well.... but ESPN 2005 has better graphics, sounds, in-game control options, more complicated playcalling options, ease of use/gameplay, playbooks, a much tougher CPU mode for playing alone, and all round attention to detail. If, like me, you love pro football, its a far superior alternative to Madden.
There is everything for the Gridiron fan in this game. If you really know and understand the game, the playcalling options alone are worth buying the game for. you can use and design fairly complex plays, tweak them, change pre-and post-snap coverages, use last minute audibles sensibly and generally control the game far easier than Madden. If you like your X's and O's as well as actually playing gameday, then this game gives you the options than Madden just can't pull off. lets face it, the gridiron is all about strategy and gameplan, and Madden makes a total mess of that side of the game.
I love this NFL 2K5 game, it's highly addictive and fun fun fun as well as being more intelligent than the Madden series. You can even play all-time classic teams and try to replicate the greatest games and plays in NFL history such as the immaculate reception or the Ice Bowl in Green Bay v Dallas from 1967 etc. The weather conditions and stadiums are replicated perfectly. it's great fun and unlike Madden, constantly challenging.
Highly recommended for serious NFL fans, you just won't be able to get enough of it. You won't regret buying ESPN, regardless of the fact its a few years old now, somehow its still better than the latest version of Madden (08). I can't wait for a newer 2009 version of this fantastic game.

It's been 3 years since NFL 2K5 was released and I'm still playing. It's amazing how this games not only is better than Madden 2005, it's also better than Madden 2006!!(and by the reviews I've read probably better then Madden 2007.
¿Why? Quite simple: these people used their brain to make this game.
Gameplay is quite the same as Madden but the graphics are far more realistic and animations are smoother than in Madden (I still don't understand how is it possible that Madden has the same graphics and glitches for the last 4 years).
Another great feature is the halftime report with highlights of the game, in Madden you get 3 stupid cows clapping their hands for about 10 seconds.
Finally, I also find very innovative the VIP system which saves profiles of the gamestyles of your friends or opponents so you can play against them actually without needing them to be with you!!
I really got angry when I knew that EA sports bought an exclusive license with the NFL. They should've used their brain and not their wallet to take out of the market the NFL 2k series.

What more can I say? It's great! I've had to buy 2 copies of it so far (I broke the first one, lol), and it's still come out cheaper than 1 copy of Madden! The graphics are awesome, and it's easy to tailor to your tastes using the profile system. I love the fact that you can play against yourself as well, it's a really interesting feature.
1 slight criticism is that the offseason AI in franchise is a little limited (only certain positions are taken in round 1 of the draft), but that's something you can llive with. Especiallyas you can guarantee yourself a top quality player that doesn't play in those positions!

This game is excellent. Less cerebral and faster than Madden, the gameplay is superb. Its just like watching ESPN.
You can also 'recreate' and play through the climax of famous games, ie the 'ice bowl', greatest ever comeback in history, 'the drive' and others.
Madden has its place, this should as well.

How good is this? EA had to buyout the NFL and ESPN to stop next years itineration. First, sega sports drops the price, and i guess the next thing, this is the best modern day football sim. The game is paced just like real life, the movement is smooth and fluid, tackles, running and passing seem realistic. I've been a madden fan for the last decade, but each year they just get slower and more cumbersome. Madden 2005 just is not fun anymore. This game brings that back, and i have happily switched camps.
Best yet, playing opposing teams means just that - you play against how other teams would play in real life, unlike Madden wehere every other team plays exactly the same. This improves the challenge.
