- Jesus Christ Superstar/Just Great
This is one that you should see ,even if its only to find out what all the fuss was about back in the 70's(and by some of the reviews I have read it would seem that it is as controversial today as it was back then)Ted Neely is perfect as Jesus and the late Carl Anderson plays a brilliant Judas.Please note this is a Rock Opera not a musical. Everyone puts their best foot forward and the singing is excellent.Yvonne Elliman sings her heart out. Sometimes funny and always moving,Shot beautifully A classic 70's must have.It is one movie I will always keep in my collection.Just great.Jesus Christ Superstar [1973]

This film is my particular favourite interpretation of the score.
Well, having watched this a whole bunch of times for own entertainment/degree study/group entertainment i can happy say this film fits each area.
Your enjoyment depends on a how important 'cinematography' and/or 'religion' is to you.
Yes they whoosh past the crucifixion & other more religious elements, some of the characters are funny, some beautiful, some of the costumes are just darn daft and Jesus tearing up a market is just magic...
HOWEVER if you LIKE

and some seriously high squeaky/impressive/stunning 70's style singing ....YOU'LL LOVE IT!!!
I find this film deeply moving in parts and laugh out loud silly in others.
Ted Neely as Jesus is beautiful (described above as a 'wimpy looking Jesus'...wander around desert land for a couple of years and see how you look ((but I'm not getting into that argument))
Neely's voice cracks, he looks strained, tired and he's thin (Some see this as a failing on his part as an actor)
BUT it's perfect for the part of a confused, torn man.
His voice sores with beauty, pain and power. The mind & body of a torn man screeches at the sky over the rocks he sings from.
It's free, it's angry and it's broken. It's beautiful and it's fuelled with the oomph of 70's ROCK.
What else is expected from a 70's ROCK Opera!!??
ROCK ON people.

There is an experience with which those of us of a certain age will be sadly familiar. It involves going back to something we really liked in the 1970s (or 1960s, or 1980s, depending on our age) and wondering, perhaps cringing slightly, what on earth we saw in it. Having had that experience often enough I approached this DVD with some caution. After all, I had _loved_ the film when it was in the cinemas several decades ago and I was a young student, but what would I feel now?
I need not have worried. Apart from the occasional wince-making turn of phrase used to force a rhyme I have no complaints. In fact I still liked "Jesus Christ Superstar" a lot. Of course it helps that this was quite possibly the best work to result from the Andrew Lloyd-Webber / Tim Rice collaboration, but the transition to the big screen is handled very well indeed. The play-within-a-play approach, with the acting troupe using the desert countryside and ruins and the absolute minimum of materials like a theatre production opened out into a grander scale open-air performance, really works. The direction and photography are excellent and the casting generally very good, Like the stage version the film reflects the main events of the Gospel story leading up to Christ's' crucifixion, even though it puts a secular spin on some of them.
"Jesus Christ Superstar" is a rock opera (not a musical) and a very good one. Those who are not automatically offended by its approach should find it thought-provoking as well as enormously entertaining.

As a musical JCS is moving, powerfull and memorable.
As a film its great. Yes its off the wall and very much of its time, but that is part of its charm.
If you are a very serious person with no sense of humour like one reviewer here, then perhaps you wont like it. But if you have a funny bone and a love of musicals then I guarantee it will make you smile wide!
For me its brilliantly cast, tremendous fun and has all the fantastic music of JCS.
Rating: - Brilliant original version of this groundbreaking musical
I much prefer this version to the more recent production staged by Andrew Lloyd Webber. I remember the original production appearing in London all those years ago and the sensation it was. This DVD is a fine reminder. To me the recent, gritty and more realistic production lacked punch. Also I much prefer the singers in this old version, for Jesus, Judas, Herod and Pilate and I think the sarcasm of the original works far better than the "realistic" version.
But I heard ALW always wanted it in the style he recently produced but originally didn't have the control over the show - so it's good to have both versions so we can compare.
