Athens offers an array of sports to try - athletics, swimming, equine sports, weight lifting, shooting and archery. As one reviewer writes, the downside of the game is that so many of the events require hard core button tapping and for me the swimming is a no go as I feel like my hand will fall off after a single lap. It's the only game I've played on the PS2 where you can pick up an injury in reality. Thankfully the game offers so much more and the decathlon soon becomes addictive. By the second week I had world records in the high jump, pole vault and long jump ! Two player mode is great fun and I can recommend the archery after a night at the pub as co-ordination is vital if you are to succeed. The graphics are great and it's one of the non football games I don't regret buying.

athens is aticttive but for only the first 2 weeks because there are no unlockibles or hidden secrets so it really is a game with a missing objective but it is a thing which you really shoudn't regret on because there is nearly every event and you will find yourself one event which you are good at, the event revolve around different methods of playing from button bashing (100m, 200m, 400m, long jump, and 105KG Mens clean and jerk) to sheer luck (shot put and archery) plus it is one of the only games which are four player without taking in turns. so if your looking for high paced action but are prepared not to expect any surpises buy this game!!!

great u cant stop playing it! You can be any country you want in the world and for the most of us the closest we're ever going to get to entering the olympics! It's not like some games where you HAVE to play with someone as otherwise it's boring this one its even fun on your own. There are all the events you expect: running races, jumping, archery, field events, skeet men and weight lifting. Each different game you have to use different controls on your ps2 whihc makes it more of a challenge. However it is very quick to pick up on and my 6 year old sister finds it easy to play. It is fantastic when you see the gold medal going around your neck!!!! You can do single challenges, customise your own challenges or do the whole bunch of events. It is not one of those games that you get bored of as there are so many different challenges an you just want to beat your last score or the olypic record! It is not as addictive as the sims but is still one of the best ps2 games ive ever played on. Go and buy it. And the plus side is girls and boys like it. Perfect present if you dont know what to buy.

I was late getting this game, waiting for the Platinum version at a cheaper price. On the whole this is a very good game, great graphics and variety of sports to play, from swimming and all the athletics disciplines to gymnastics and archery.
Particular good graphics are playing the 800m or 1500m track, feels like you're really running in the race. The equestrian show jumping is good fun also, and is not as easy as it looks. Perhaps the game you will find yourself playing the most is the Skeet(clay pigeon shooting), it's quite hard to master, but will have you sitting there with your eyeballs glued to the screen trying to time your shots correctly!!
The downside is that most of the race games and the swimming is just a frantic lot of button-bashing, and if you slow for a moment your player gets left behind and can't catch up. Not a recommended gameplay style for people with hand mobility problems like I occasionally get. The other games that don't require button-bashing are very enjoyable though.
Well worth 4 stars!
