Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Who's (still) the Daddy?
The new series of 'Doctor Who' was colourful, frothy, frenetic, scary, funny, ridiculous - but always engaging.
New Doctor: Chris Ecclestone's tougher Time Lord vacillated between quirky exuberance and utter intensity, reinvigorating a character that might have been utterly out-of-place in the 21st century.
New Companion: What a revelation! Billie Piper deserved all the accolades she received.
The Stories:
ROSE - The burst of energy that launched the series and a formula that would deal as much with characters and emotional drama as it would monsters and "out there" storylines. 7/10
THE END OF THE WORLD - A wonderful tonic to so much po-faced SF from the US. Davies' thinly veiled attack on human vanity and greed is slotted into a fabulous space opera. 8/10
THE UNQUIET DEAD: Funny and frightening in equal measures. Simon Callow as Dicken! What more can one say? 8/10
ALIENS OF LONDON/WORLD WAR III: The first story into production is a little shaky, with some mugging evident but Davies' brilliant spin on a traditional invasion story deserves credit. 6/10
DALEK: First true classic of the series. A mini movie! 9/10
THE LONG GAME: The threat is vague and the design flat but if there was going to be a filler episode, it could have been a lot worse. 5/10
FATHER'S DAY: A genuinely moving script that deals with the less enticing side of time travel. 9/10
THE EMPTY CHILD/THE DOCTOR DANCES: Simply gorgeous. 'Doctor Who' at its most cinematic. 9/10
BOOM TOWN: Hilarious one moment and then rather dark, with the Doctor dealing with an ethical dilemma - what to do with a villain who says she's changed her ways. 6/10
BAD WOLF/THE PARTING OF THE WAYS: From playful satire to full on comic strip version of the series - with Daleks! A fine, emotive end to a season that puts 'Doctor Who' back on top. 9/10

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great show but why wasn't the full Confidential included?
When the first episode of Doctor Who came out earlier this year I tuned in mearly out of curiosity. As I was only 7 when the original show was cancelled I had never seen an episode. Therefore I wasn't sure what to expect. What I did see was very impressive. Here was a show that was not only exciting and entertaining, but also well written and funny. I was soon hooked and so the DVD boxset was a must for me as a fan. I won't go through every episode in this boxset because it has been covered in other reviews. But my favourates from the season have to be "Dalek" and "The parting of the Ways" dealing with the dalek threat, and also "Father's Day" focusing on Rose's storyline. I also enjoyed seeing the regeneration at the end of the series and it is a pity that we never see the regeneration from the eighth doctor (Paul McGann) to the ninth doctor (Christopher Eccleston), still never mind.

On to the special features. Although the special features are great (including commentaries for all the episodes, behind the scenes footage and a preview of the upcoming christmas episode) I was a bit dissapointed that the Doctor Who confidential on the DVD is not the ones that were shown on BBC 3 but rather an edited version of them. What I enjoyed most about the Doctor Who Confidential shown on TV was the interviews with previous doctors and clips from the old show. Unfortunately all of this has been cut out and the DVD version just focuses on the new series.

Still apart from this one negative the rest of the DVD boxset is fantastic and I'm glad I bought it.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Doctor, Doctor, this is the best TV show of 2005!
Doctor Who is back and better than ever. The boxset contains all thirteen episodes from 2005. In ROSE, Rose Tyler meets the Doctor. In END OF THE WORLD, the sun is about to swallow the planet. In THE UNQUIET DEAD, the dead are walking in Victorian Cardiff. In ALIENS OF LONDON, Big Ben is destroyed. In WORLD WAR THREE, the Slitheen wreak havoc. In DALEK, an old enemy returns. In THE LONG GAME, the gang travel to the year 200000. In FATHER'S DAY, Rose saves her father's life [after travelling back to 1987 when he was killed]. In THE EMPTY CHILD, Rose meets Captain Jack Harkness. In THE DOCTOR DANCES, the empty child's zombie army is growing. In BOOM TOWN, the Slitheen are back. In BAD WOLF, the travellers fight for their lives aboard the GameStation. In PARTING OF THE WAYS, the Daleks are back and they only have one purpose in mind. To destroy the Doctor.

Stars Christopher Eccleston, Billie Piper and John Barrowman.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - David Tennant?
With over nine hours of Doctor Who, the episodes and the confidential, this is a must-have. I think the first series was interesting because you didn't really know what to expect. Enjoy Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper in crazy adventures, and Doctor Who Confidential afterwards. The Doctor and Rose do, of course, make a perfect couple. I must comment, however, that I wonder what Doctor Who will offer us next? As we said goodbye to fabulous Doctor Christopher Eccleston, we introduce David Tennant, but will he be as successful as Chris?

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Slightly different from the original, but still brilliant.
I grew up on reruns of Doctor Who in the US twenty years ago. We were usually a few years behind what was currently airing in the UK. I saw most if not all of the Pertwee episodes, and all of the episodes from Tom Baker forward and then read all of the Hartnell and Troughton stories that had been released in books that I could fine (I'd like to apologize for that abomination that Fox Broadcasting did in the 90s, not much else I can say about that. McGann had the potential to be a great Doctor but had a bad script). When I heard that The Doctor was returning I was excited but sceptical. I followed the press and critics but wouldn't read any spoilers. I just finished watching this set (thanks to my multi-region DVD player) and have to admit that I'm no longer a sceptic. The Doctor is back!!!. I think the writing is good (OK, maybe a little campy on one or two cases) but over all, very good. I like how the stories have become intertwined. The final episode of the set pulled from so many parts of earlier episodes of the new series and made seemingly unrelated events tie together nicely. I can't wait for the next set (I know they haven't even aired in the UK yet so I've got a long wait for the DVDs). I think anyone who is a former Who fan would enjoy these and anyone who has never heard of The Doctor (although for the life of me I can't imagine how that could happen) would be able to pick up the premise and enjoy them as well.
