Electronics : Shinco PMP-1700 40 GB HDD Portable Multi Region Media Player, 7" TFT display,USB jack,Built in card reader, Video / audio out. Capable of storing 55 movies

Having tired of unreliable dvdr playback on portable dvd players, decided to try this - glad I did. Instructions are a bit rubbish but its fairly intuitive, the feel of it is quite sleek, the only downside so far is that the buttons take a few clicks to work and the remote can be the same, but its bearable.
Just load mp4 versions of your movies and they play really well - good quality and still good when you hook it up to your tv. I use dvdfab platinum 4 for conversion which is very good but takes about 90 mins to convert a film to mp4, then about 4 min to transfer the file.No software it just shows as an external drive and must be used with pc - it obviously doesnt play discs,but has sd/mmc/cf inputs for transfer without pc.
It takes mp3 and wma audio files and whilst the speakers are a bit tinny, with good phones its fine (in ear senheisser eg). Bought mine from trumpet electronics who were sig cheaper and delivered next day for £95 all in.

I have been looking at PMPs for several months and decided, finally, that the Shinco pmp1700 had it all. Big screen, big hard disk all in a smart package. Ideal for storing and viewing all my digital photos and mpeg4 home movies.
I searched long and hard for reviews and found just one by T3 magazine and despite this lack of info, decided to take the plunge and buy it.
The Pros
The Shinco is very sleek and nicely made. The user interface is very simple and a doddle to use. It comes with a good range of accessories, including a remote control and a cigarette lighter adapter.
The cons
The screen is not too good. Colours are good but photos lack crispness. The biggest problem is that it will only show photos in widescreen. So all my snaps are now stretched and very strange looking. It also has no facility to rotate photos.
So, all in all a rather half thought out device. If you want to play videos, then fine. But if you want it as a digital photo album, then look elsewhere. It has potential but needs a lot of refining before it's worth buying. I'm sending mine back.
