- The best "racing" experience on any system
There are driving games like Gran Turismo and Project Gotham and then there are racing games like TOCA and pretty much nothing else. No other game captures the white knuckle, perspiration soaked feel of battling with a full grid of aggressive drivers. Where other games have you learn a track intimately and then steam away from the competition, TOCA has you ducking, diving and outwitting the superbly competitive AI drivers as well as mastering an incredibly comprehensive selection of tracks.
The feel of every single car in the game is spot on. They feel like the real thing but without too much intricate detail that would detract from the racing. We don't want to spend years learning to drive like Mr Schumacher, we want to pretend we can drive like him the minute we pop TOCA into our PS2. And this is the magic of TOCA Race Driver 2. It combines all of the best bits of driving games into a game that puts fighting for the lead first and tempts the player to get that balance of skill and aggression just right. Any time you slide off the track you know it was all your own fault.
With a mountain of vehicle choices, driving disciplines and authentic and fantasy tracks to choose from TOCA will also last longer than most of the chasing pack combined. And don't be fooled by the inferior sequel. TOCA Race Driver 3 has a seriously unfair tendency to spin you off the track at any opportunity while the competition races into the distance. TOCA Race Driver 2 is racing perfected. If you want to feel what it must be like to fight your way past a full grid of racers and really earn that first place look no further than this racing masterpiece.

Got this beauty about a week ago and its one of the best buys I've made so far for my PS2!. This game is neither too easy nor too hard and the more I play on it the more immersive it becomes... the idea of unlocking further tracks as you progress through career mode means that this has excellent long playability... I'm tempted to buy Toca 3 but to be honest am too busy with this one!.
Excellent sound and good graphics and a real feel of the speed and the handling of the cars... also you don't need a steering wheel as the handset controls work really well with this... all in all a great buy that has made me a proper petrol head!!!!! vroom vroooommmmm VVVVRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!.... THUNDER BIRDS ARE GO!!!!!!!!!.... sorry got carried away there!!!...

Aside from the Burnout series this is definitely the best driving game on PS2 and the leaves the frankly stuffy and boring Gran Turismo for dust. Ok the graphics might not be as good but for entertainment value this is so much better (who does the 24 hour endurance races on GT anyway!!!)
Plenty of vehicles are included and lots of tracks and competitions plus it is easy to get straight into.
Buy it.

Who would have thought at the PS2 launch that we would have a racing game of this quality and size on the platform? Within a lap of the first race, it is obvious that RD2 is almost as good as a PS2 racer can get!
An accessible, immersing, compelling and technically sound motor sport simulation. More racing categories, championships and circuits than you could really want, although some are more interesting and better realised than others.
A career mode that works relatively well and encourages you to progress up the performance ladder. Even the storyline and script is not too lame! The structure could however be truer to the real world.
Graphically stunning in places, Adelaide is an impressive recreation. A convincing circuit racing physics model where you can really lean on the race cars to push and explore the limit.
RD2 demands a serious investment of time and rewards that commitment superbly.

- A bit of a letdown
Well, after years of practice at making good/great racing games (with the ToCa & Colin McRae series) they manage to put out this underachiever. It starts off well - apart from the trucks, which steer like cattle. I liked the idea of the career mode, but having to live down to the guy's personality is little annoying - it is at least better than the first one on this account. At this point I would have given it a 4.
However, it's not linear in it's expectations of your driving; it gets hard very suddenly - and I've finished all the Toca's & McRae's previously.
And the second - and most - annoying thing is: this from the very people that brought us McRae - so WHY are the rally cars such ridiculously poor drives. They steer like granny with her zimmer - it put me in mind of Codies old Tommi Makinen rally that preceded McRae.
So a 3 from me, in the hope of number 3 being better. (But it was touch and go for a 2.)
