Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - GTA IV
Ok, a lot of people have been comparing this heavily to San Andreas which is fair enough as they are in the same series of games. The most notible comparisons being that of the things that have been left out, i.e taking over businesses etc. Although i agree with this, in Rockstar's defence they have had to build this game for a brand new platform. I think this is a very good first GTA game on the PS3. I try and look at it from the point of view that Rockstar have effectively had to start again. When you think about it, San Andreas showed that Rockstar had clearly got to grips with programming the PS2 as it was coming to the end of its lifespan. Because the PS3 is brand new, i'm sure Rockstar have had to get to grips with programming the game for a Blue Ray disc not to mention getting the game on both platforms (PS3 and XBox).
I think its also worth noting that they probably have plans to make a few more of these games and there is always an incredible amount of pressure on them to make it better each time. This debut game has given a bit of room to improve and future games i'm sure will be brilliant. Lets face it, there can't be many people that didn't find this game fun to play. If you did get too involved by the hype, thats your own fault isn't it!
All GTA fans should by this game as it still has all of the elements that make this series of games great and more.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Good fun, but ultimately disappointing.
I'll kick off by saying that despite my following comments, I have actually enjoyed playing this game. Like most other reviewers, I've been a huge fan of GTA since GTA III, and was eagerly anticipating this one. I'll leave the positive comments to the other reviewers, however......

1.) Don't be sucked in by the 10/10 graphics ratings! This game has an ugly amount of blur. Don't be misled by the fanboys, just type 'GTA4 blurry' in to Google and you'll be staggered by the number of complaints on this issue. It seems that picture quality varies across a wide range of TV's, so there must be a major compatibilty problem somewhere. I only managed to make mine look presentable after an unfeasable amount of time adjusting the TV and in-game settings. The physics and attention to detail are infinitely better, but the overall finish is not what you'd expect from a next-gen game.

2.) This game IS rather shallow. The story missions seemed a hell of a lot easier than in previous games, and took no time at all to complete. The new cover/combat system (although rather awkward at close quarters) makes the big gun fights incredibly easy. In fact, it almost takes the challenge away. There's nowhere near the volume of side-missions and 100% objectives as in San Andreas. There are fewer vehicles, fewer weapons and no major unlockables to speak of. I don't consider myself to be a games master, but its only taken me a week to reach the 78% mark. In comparison, I spent months chipping away at San Andreas.

3.) My biggest disappointment was not being able to acuire businesses and territories, which made the previous games so enjoyable. I loved the feeling of gradually taking over the city in VC and SA, but there is nothing of the sort to offer in the new Liberty City. There are only 5 safehouses on the entire map, and one of those burns down early in the game!! The characteristic gangs that roamed certain neighbourhoods of the other games have also been chopped.

4.) All the hype about improved AI is false. Most of the time, the enemies just stand there like idiots waiting to be shot. At the end of the final mission, the guy just stood still while I pumped bullets in to him!! Not what I was expecting at all.

Overall, I'd still recommend this game just for the GTA fun factor. However, this is a poor offering considering the processing power Rockstar had available to them. If you're a hardcore fan, who likes to play the game as it's intended to be played, you'll be left feeling quite disappointed by the end of it.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - GTA IV
Ok as along time fan of the Grand Theft Auto series barring the shockingly bad Liberty City and Vice City stories this game has got to be the best yet as im sure a lot of people have said.

Now i am halfway through the game beginning to start work with Jimmy Pegorino.

But please allow me to give my proverbial 5 cents on this game.

Gameplay and graphics are simpley amazing, the detail on the whole damn city, the cars, the characters hell even the strippers is no reason why this game had raked $200 million worldwide on its first day.

Long story short, Niko comes off a boat and arrives in Liberty City to start fresh and meets up Roman but the surprise apperances of an old foe and new ones puts Niko short and then he starts working with various people as GTA games do for money, however theres also a new catch on certain enemies you kill you can do a sweet looking execution and on some missions you can either spare their lives or walk away depends how cold hearted you people really are lol.

The best cars in the game has got to be to my knowledge the Turismo which in next gen graphics look absolutely sweet and the infernus. A good thing they added on the cars, you know how on cars they have their names imprinted on them, on GTA IV they do just that. If you zoom in to either the back or the side you can see it just to add that little bit more realism to the game.

Gone are garages and now you can save cars via a parking space outside your apartment.

Fast food faves Clucking Bell and Burgershot make a return and even they look impressive lol.

Story missions aside you can do random character missions to earn extra money which is a nice touch.

Now for those like me who hate the chopper missions cause of the handling worry no more as like the cars, boats and bikes, the choppers take advantage of the new sixaxis system for easier control which is a big help.

Also you can access the internet and check the liberty city tree newspaper site and see your own crimes which gives you a sense of pride, you can also do some online dating which is fun for taking time outta missions.

A big feature is the mobile/cell phone, to start off with you get a crappy generic one but as your progress you get a new phone which has a camera and yes mp3 ring tones and you can ringtones and themes for the phone off the web.

You can watch the television lol and see such stars as Ricky Gervais, Katt Williams aswell as Weazel News to hear about your crimes lol oh the fun you can have.

The online multiplayer option is a brilliant first try from Rockstar and has many different modes to play, my personal fave is free mode so if you see a bigsteviecool20 on there, thats me:P

I could go on and on about the positives which really outnumber the bad but this is a review and i cannot sugar coat it and say it has no negatives as it does, only a small one but one that can leave you cursing the tv lol

The negative is the glitches in the game, i.e: the game just self pauses for a few seconds and by the time you gain control espically if your in a fast car or a mission it can offer prove disatrous also as you can expect you get quite a bit of lag on the online multiplayer mode which again is extremely annoying but you get that on any kind online game like Call of Duty for example.

Also the main installing on the hard drive is a pisser, that takes about half an hour lol

But however rockstar have done an updated patch which you can install which stops many of the glitches and plus with the game being simply a contender to Game of The Year 2008 i have to give it 5 stars to the best game ive played on in a long time.

But buy it for yourself but i guarntee you wont be disapointed.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - An amazing game but should come with a warning
Firstly this game is brilliant. Its alot of fun etc etc. I'm not going to regergetate what others have already said. However my only problem is a massive one. As you may or may not be aware GTA4 has been plagued with freezing problems. After playing for about 13 days it has frozen twice. The first time I had been playing for about 6 hours in one go so I can understand why it froze and thought nothing of it. However, the other day I had been playing for about 15 minutes and it froze for a second time. I wasn't too worried about it and decided to restart the console. But when trying to load the game again I noticed it was not working. I tryed a few other dics including dvds and non worked. So I now have a broken blu ray drive woop de doo. It all stems down to playing online and being connected to the internet while playing. Don't do it. The patch they have realised does not fix the freezing problems so don't go online and risk having a broken PS3. Luckily my console was still under warrenty (runs out about the 26th of May) and I am now waiting for a exchange console. If your console is not under warrenty do not risk it until they have realised a patch to fix the problems. You will have a hefty repair bill.

Altogether this game is amazing but this one episode has put me off. Just stay offline and it should be fine...hopefully anyway.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Excellent game
Just a quick note to say this game is brill. Rockstar have now released an update that fixes the freezing issues and it now works perfectly
