Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - More in-depth, Less crazy fun
GTA 4 is a very enjoyable game, but unlike its previous title San Andreas, there are no planes, no swimming underwater, no jetpack, no gambling etc. The storyline is very intense and more in-depth than San Andreas, but havign completed the game 100% there is little to do afterwards. A 6-star rating doesn't even summon the army to try and kill you, just a whole load more police cars. Also there are no countrysides, just a few very small parks. The cars have very detailed graphics and physics are a vast improvement on previous GTA titles. The most intense vehicle you'll get a hold of though is a chopper with machine guns...

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Objectivity Please?
I'm amazed.
Alot of reviewers here are finding some fault(s) with this game yet the 5 stars and 10/10 reviews are flying about the place.

This edition of GTA is better than the last but only in some areas. It is NOT, in my view at least, a big enough improvement on San Andreas to earn 5 stars or 10/10 - sometimes I think gamers lose the plot and their objectivity.

There's no point raving about basics like the graphics - it's on the PS3, the graphics are supposed to be good!

Alot of the mundane things you had to do in San Andreas are gone, and good riddance. But why oh why have Rockstar not done something about the single most annoying thing that has dogged the GTA series? Let me explain.

Some of the missions are long and begin with mundane tasks such as driving to a location for the action to begin, such as the bank heist mission. It begins with a long drive with 3 guys in the car and you have to do this part every time you repeat the mission. It's annoying because it's a great mission and you will die (or one of your party will die) a few times before you pass it - yet you have to keep doing the pain in the ass driving bit every frickin time. WHY?

When you get to the end of the game, where you're out to get Pecorino, the game allows you to skip the mundane driving bit (after you do it once), why can we not do this in other missions?

I suspect it's because it will take you longer to finish the game, creating an illusion that the game is massive. It's a big game but in the end it's disappointingly not big enough and the mundane tasks are a pain as usual.

Vice City was a huge step forward from GTA3. San Andreas was equally impressive as a follow up (albeit with some pointless side activities - body building and the like.) To this day Vice City still brings a smile to my face.

GTA 4 is not a big enough improvement on it's predecessors to earn 5 stars or 10/10. If I was writing Rockstar's report card I'd probably say "should try harder" or "could do better".

I'm not saying don't buy it. If it was the first in the series I'd be impressed. But GTA has raised the bar - perhaps too high for its own good.

Out of 10 I'd give it 6.5 or 3.5 stars - unfortunately Amazon won't allow me give half a star so it will have to be 3.

Rockstar, take my advice. Go back to basics and then build on what people love about GTA - the chance to be a gangster and to have fun doing it.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Biggest Game of 08 Has Its Flaws
On the viewing of the first trailer for GTA IV the world took a deep breath and said "Holy Crap" and that feeling carried on right up until the actual games release date when people queued for hours in anticipation of the game, but after all that hype the real question to be asked of people is, "Was it worth it?" Both yes and no for truly different reasons and with my review I plan on giving both the pros and cons to this game but I'm sad to say that they're primarily cons, but let's first focus on the biggest pro of them all.

Pro: The Attention to Detail: The Liberty City map isn't massive as we were warned in pre-release interviews of the developers, though we had the map size reduction we were given an immensely detailed surrounding. The roads, the walls, even the trees have some interesting detail to offer when simply walking around the city. You come to notice things that you start to think to yourself, was there really a point in putting that in the game when it's sacrificing the activity content of the game.

Con: The Lack of Size: As mentioned before we were given pre-warning that the map would be considerably smaller than that of San Andreas. The truly bad thing about this is that the most enjoyable thing about San Andreas was the truly divers environments contained in the massive San Andreas, yet given the smaller Liberty City we are limited to one very cliché setting of a bustling city lifestyle.

Pro: Duck & Cover/Police Search: This has to be the biggest improvement in the game altogether as it gives us a much more realistic element to the whole experience of GTA. If committing a crime there either have to be witnesses or a cop nearby, if there are none of the pre-mentioned then simply the cops wont be after you but if you have a wanted level and are driving around in hope of escaping the wanted circle but are unable to because your car is familiar to them, you have the ability to switch cars and if done properly you can drive carefully past a Police car without them being aware that it's you in the car that they're after. This makes the experience ultra realistic and along with the ability to duck & cover so if you enter into a gun fight with the police you can take cover behind a car door and keep on shooting.

Con: Lack of Stuff To Do: This is the biggest flaw in the game and really ruins the replay value of the whole game. In San Andreas there were literally hundreds of activities that you could perform at your leisure if you were bored with performing mission after mission. You could go sky diving, swimming under water, dancing, gambling etc. etc. the list goes on and on but with GTA IV we are given an immensely detailed environment but at the sacrifice of the activities and I feel this is the biggest letdown.

There are many other cons and many other pros for which I could go on about for hours but I'm going to stop at this as it's something a GTA fan should experience and decide for themselves. This should be a part of your collection as it's simply something that could be considered a part of gaming history, after all it's one of the very few game franchises that has seen its tenure cross the 3 generations of the Sony Playstation and if current sales figures indicate anything, I think we can guarantee that this will be a series to continue across many more game generations.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - is there life after 40%?
Have been playing this on and off for a couple fo weeks and am now at 40%. My opinions have changed as Ive worked through and unfortunatly not for the better. Am relatively new to GTA, tho did played San Andreas abit, so don't have a deep GTA experience as a point of reference.

First the good:
The sheer scale of the city - set your gps and drive, as close to a living, breathing city that you'll see on your console - and boy does it look good.
The missions are great fun at 1st, once you get the hang of the combat settings!
Interaction - the characters are novel and funny (at least at 1st)
Sub missions - a nice distraction esp the races or police computer stuff Cars - once you get the hang of cornering - great fun and a great selection

No so good
AI - police, too easy to loose and whens the last time you saw police not reacting to a jumped red light!
Repetive - after a while the misisons become very samey, drive for a bit, cover / shoot the bad guy, cover / shoot some more - drive back get some cash.
Friend subplots - again novel at first but the whole dating / going out with your mates thing gets really dull - after a while I just stopped - even real mates are more fun!

Games live or die by the sense of achievement they provide and unfortunalty after a while, for me, GTA IV doesnt offer any. Once you earned over 100K got all the weapons / clothes you want, its like, OK theres nothing else I can buy so whats the point. The missions feel the same so theres no real challenge. Ive lost interest in the sub plots, so theres little motivation for me to want to play it.

It's a good game on many levels and I really enjoyed it at first, its just that as time has worn on it appeals less and less. Id like to keep going but I really think todays purchase of MGS 4 is going mean that 40% is as far as I get.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Completed - Great game
i have never been a fan of the Grand Theft auto series due to the large maps and the ever increasing amount of rubbish you can do on them (get a hircut get tattoos and bunny hop over lampposts on bicycles). However i reluctantly agreed to purchase this game as a joint buy with my brother. Firstly i would like to say that the graphics have always lacked on these games due to the small disc sizes and the large maps and information needed to be stored. With the blueray discs though the huge maps and information is still great but there is a hell of a lot more memory on the discs to produce some of the greatest graphics you will see.

The storyline is by far the best on any GTA game that has preceeded this one. And the gameplay is so amazing that even when you run people down in your car, they never ever fell the same way twice.

The reason i gave this game 4 and not 5 stars was purely because i didnt think the online multiplayer was good enough, the lobby system was poor and you are left hanging around for long.

If you want this game as an online multiplayer then i can suggest some which are much better. For a one player arcade game however. look no further! It is amazing.
