Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Short but Sweet!
Heavenly Sword is a stylish and enjoyable romp through some truely beautiful and lifelike backdrops. The attention to detail is speactacular and clearly was a labour of love for the producers.

I really wanted to enjoy this game and in many ways I did. The grace and style in which Nariko moves is visually impressive. The combat itself is spectatcular to watch. Countering attacks and adapting fighting stances depending on situations and enemies is also good fun. Some people have complained about Nariko's inability to jump but this is not really a problem as battles are engaging enough without unnecesary complications.

Enemeies rarely attack in a way which overwhelms, so it is fairly easy to master the fighting mechanics. There are some brutal special moves which add a touch of finess to an already stunning fighting engine. The havoc physics programme adds to the carnage on the screen, with benches splintering into debris as Nariko effortlessly dispatches her foe. The more accomplished you become, the more balletic Nariko's attacks become. I read somewhere that one programmer's responsibilty was animating Nariko's hair! I can see why Heavenly Sword turned heads at E3.

Also worthy of praise is the realism of the character animations and cut scenes. The ending of the game is quite beautiful to behold and even non gamers will be struck by the level of detail in these emotive closing moments.

What about the downside? Well, regretably there are several less positive aspects. Let's start with the obvious: Heavenly Sword is woefully short. It does have some replay value but not of the scale of other similar titles. In addition to this, there are some fairly bland sections involving the character, Kai (Nariko's adopted sister) encorporating a game she refers to as 'Twing Twang'. Actually, it simply means firing arrows at your enemies and manipulating the flight of the arrow to hit premarked targets. I spent a lot of time, making rather an arse of my self, turning the sisaxis controller in various directions to create improbable arrow flights, which more often that not, failed to hit their intended targets. Grrrr. But don't despair armchair archers, you can switch the motion sensor off and use the analogue stick instead. So much easier and we're back in the game...

Other negative aspects: The promised scale of the battles is predictaby misleading. Many big battles are an extension of the 'Twing Twang' concept only this time, Nariko's got balls! Cannon balls that is. This time, you have to destroy large catapults as well as creating carnage on the field of battles. Listen to the roars of horror as hundreds of moronic soldiers are dispatched with relative ease.

Later on, you do face the hoards alone, as Nariko, but it is relatievly easy to carve up your foe when in posession of the Heavenly Sword itself. In fact, you will find that only a few enemies will attack at the same time. admittedly, I have only completed the game on the normal difficulty setting.

The finale of the game is a rather prolonged battle with the evil King Bohan (voiced by Andi Serkis of Gollum fame). Bohan is a rather two dimensional character with misguided visions of power and a Raven on his shoulder instead of a chip! There are some Matrix like moments thrown in as Nariko and Bohan are locked in mortal combat above the field of battle. All very impressive but at times a little tedious.

In summary, Heavenly Sword is a beautiful game to look at. It is a showcase for what the PS3 can do and let's face it, the console needs a bit of a boost right now. It is good fun to play for the short time that it lasts. The weird and wonderful Boss charcters, which I have not mentioned in my review, also provide entertainment. If you are thinking of purchasing this game, you may consider renting it instead, or even purchasing a second hand copy. However, if you don't mind the game being a tad short and want to savour the splendid visuals and stunning combat, go for it!

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Over-Rated
The person who called this game "Near Perfect" must have low expectations in the way of what a game should have. Here are the faults with Heavenly Sword:
1. The game is very very short it will take less than seven hours to beat.
2. The game play isn't varied enough apart from the arrow sections where you guide them using the six-axis controller that bit is brilliant.
3. It's based around a story thats not actually that strong.
4. There are no stand out sections, no reason to play it again and it gets a bit samey after a while.

Those are main problems with Heavenly Sword

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - A bit of a letdown but great to look at
Visually 'Heavenly Sword' is probably the most beautiful and graphically detailed game I have ever seen, The backgrounds and character designs are so realistic you will think you are watching a movie whilst playing it! Gameplay-wise though, unfortunately, it is just an average and fairly basic hack and slash button-basher and is also over pretty quickly.

I'm not sure whether my disappointment was mainly because this was one of the games that really made me want to get a PS3 or whether because it is lacking the depth and playability of games such as Prince of Persia or Assassin's Creed, but either way I felt very letdown as this is a game that I have been keeping an eye open for for over a year and it didn't live upto my (maybe a little too high) expectations at all.

If you have played and enjoy games like Dynasty Warriors, Ninety Nine Nights or just the fighting parts of the Prince of Persia games I'd definitely give it a go. Otherwise I strongly recommend giving the demo a play first before making a purchase.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Length? What length.
This game has serious issues. The gameplay is fun and nobody can deny that the aftertouch system with the projectiles is one of the most inventive uses of the sixaxis controller but the whole game was spoilt by the basic storyline, repetetive fighting and short gameplay. In a game length isnt important but when paired up with mind numbing repetetive battles for example the last three "scenes" of the game are fighting the same boss in similar forms where the only difference is a slightly varied ranged attack and a different location. It is a huge waste of time to be honest and with no decent unlockables its just a clever idea with huge potential left to rot itself into a mind numbing video game death. 5 star reviewers need to consider value for money and play longer than an hour.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Truly Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Got this game as a present from my parents. It has to be one of the best PS3 games out at the moment and will take some beating. BUY THIS GAME. It will not disapoint.
