Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - New to Mario
Despite there already being 33 Reviews for this game (at time of writing) I feel that I can add something here.
Unlike the vast majority of reviewers, I've never played Mario 64. In fact the last time I had any contact with the moustachioed one was back on the Gameboy in about 1992.

Having bought a wii with Sports and Play a couple of months ago, I'd finally got to the point where I wanted to buy a "proper" game but nothing had really caught my eye. I'm usually more into the sports or fighting genres as opposed to cutsie platform games but the consistancy of the reviews for Mario Galaxy made me think it must be something special.
I paid just shy of £30 for the game (not from amazon - they had sold out) with the view that even if it wasn't for me, I could always sell it on.
Having just spent the ENTIRE weekend engrossed in the game I can honestly say I feel silly for having doubted whether it would be any good.
The graphics are smart and colourful but the gameplay is something else. It's just an absolute joy to play - one of those games where you find yourself saying "I'll just play one more level. Just one more..."

At time of writing I've completed nearly half of the standard levels/galaxies but I could easily play them all again.
Also I get the feeling that there'll be enough hidden areas and extra levels to get plenty of life out of this game.

The only downside I can think of is that the opening sequence (ie setting the storyline) is a bit long. And that's honestly the only negative I can think of.

If you're not an existing fan of Mario and don't knoe if this sort of game is for you. Take a chance! I did and it seriously paid off.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A Wii Essential - Don't Deliberate - It's Awesome
I've seen Mario grow up.

When he was climbing those ladders in the fiendishly difficult Donkey Kong, I was more addicted to Scramble.

When he had his own series of console and arcade outings with his less famous brother, I was playing on my Spectrum, my Amiga or my PC.

I tried platformers. I tried them repeatedly as people incessantly raved about them. I never enjoyed them. So I never really looked at any for years. They were OK for 20 minutes or so, but then I'd get frustrated and give up and go play Quake 2 online and realise why I hated platform games.

Then, in February, I bought a Wii, because I thought they looked cool and seemed to redefine what video gaming was all about. And I was right. But I still didn't try any platform games. Coz they're booooring.

Last week I was looking through Amazon with my 5 year-old son, trying to decide which Wii game we were going to get for Christmas.

I was drawn to Mario Galaxy, God knows why, so I did a little research. It looked like a good game and seemed to be a departure from your standard platform fare, so tentatively I ordered it.

It arrived yesterday and I haven't left it alone since!

it's awesome. The level design is pure inspired genius. The control couldn't be done on anything other than the classic remote/nunchuck pairing the Wii offers, but it's totally unobtrusive. It feels natural and easy.

The variety offered in the levels is stupendous and each planet has its own character. But more than anything this game provides you with that feeling of utter magic only Nintendo seem able to create. It implores you to try that last level again, because you KNOW you can do it, and anyway if you can't you KNOW it's gonna be a load of fun trying.

I can't say this loudly enough... "I LOVE THIS GAME!!!OnE11!"

I'm going to play this game to the very end. And when I do I'll start again. Then I'll cry because it's finished and it's very likely a game like this won't come along again for a long time.

Buy it.

If you have a Wii, this is the ONLY game that you simply MUST buy.

Do it.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Can only endure in short doses!
I'm often a person that disagrees with most game reviews, the lowly rated ones I will love and the highly rated ones I'll lack the ability to understand. The rather highly rated SMG (gamestm 9/10, ign 9.7) is another example of this. Its not that its a bad game, but it just doesn't appeal to me.

Now admitedly i'm a newbie to Nintendo. Its an area of gaming i've alwated wanted to develop an interest in. Thankfully i've met lots of new gamers at uni, some of who hav allowed me to try out their games, and i'm finally starting to get aquainted. I've recently developed an addiction to super mario bros on DS, an absolutley awesome game makes me question what else i've been missing out on all this time. As I loved this, I was pretty eager to see more and so I decided to give SMG a try. As a fan of games such as Prey, Portal and anything that thinks outside of the box, I was excited by the concept of Mario galaxy.

I find this game to be very clever at some points. Being able to walk over the edge of a planet and not die (traversing the plane upside-down) is quite a thrilling idea at first, and some of the locations are very well thought out (exploiting this feature of the game). However, rather unfortunately, this is something I can only endure in short doses before I feel like taking the game out and playing something else (the camera annoys me slightly). I've also heard numerous times about how the transition from 2D to 3D has been a successful one. I personally disagree, and games such as Mario, Sonic and Rayman I will always prefer more in 2D. I find it very difficult to disperse of my enemies by jumping on them in this game (unlike with the 2d equivalent), and I'm very thankful for the spin attack that can be pulled off by waving the wii-mote control. The controls in this game are very good and I love how the wii-mote has been used. It's very easy to pick up and play and the ability to use a second wii-mote and involve somebody else into your single player game is a really cool idea. As I'm trying to concentrate more on jumping and moving around, I often loose my pointer on the screen, and so I'm thankful to have a second player to help keep track of that for me (although its frustrating when your bud won't stop clicking on Mario, making him jump, when your trying to move around, lol.) The 2D version of Mario also felt like it could be enjoyed by everyone. Some of this game does feel a little childish to me; great if you're young at heart, or are indeed a young gamer, but I'm not amused by it. Despite this though, I wouldn't say it was just a kid's game, it is indeed pretty tough at some points, and if u like a challenge like me, then there are parts of this game you will really enjoy. Personally, other than the motion sensitive controls and planets concept, this game doesn't feel like anything too different to me, and many of the enemies I recognise from Super Mario Bros. The game also starts off with Peach getting kidnapped by a Bowser once again... Then again, I tend not to be a traditionalist.

Overall, this is not a bad game and I'm sure any young gamer or Mario fan that's grown up with Nintendo will love it without a doubt. But if your a Mario newbie like me, you might want to trial it before you buy. It makes a great new adition to the nintendo line-up, and I look forward to completing the rest of the game in the short installments in which i play it, but i'm not encouraged to buy it. I was torn between giving this an overall rating of 3 or 4, but I decided to give it a 4 as some parts are quite inovative and my mate absoltley loves it. As someone who understands Nintendo and grew up with Mario, he is not disappointed and I'm sure he would have given it a full 5...

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Worlds of fun
An amazingly fun and fresh feeling quirky platformer. Nintendo is fully back on form.
The best game on the Wii. Period.
