Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - This recorder will change your life!
Purchased this little beauty about 6 months ago primarily to record loud band rehearsals and gigs. Coupled with a Sony ECM-MS907 stereo mic the MZ-RH1 gives faithful recording and a wonderfully detailed stereo sound stage even under extreme sound pressure levels; you know the score, partic. when the band is flat out in what amounts to little more than a living room!
Very easy to use, very reliable and the download onto Sonicstage and beyond couldn't be easier. I am a musician first and techno geek second and if you need a simple means of capturing live music this is the baby for you.
It can mix it as a straight MP3 too, but without doubt it shines as a recorder. You can also set it to higher recording sensitivities so again ideal for capturing voice and dialogue. Best buy I've made for some time.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great MiniDisc recorder/MP3 player!
I've had a few minidisc recorders and while they've all been really good they have some limitations; the MZ-RH1 has removed those limitations and this is one classy piece of hardware. I've stopped listening to my iPod for music as the sound quality on this device with good headphones (HD600) is just so much better. The size is nice and small and the looks really are great, a bit retro, and it is very quiet when spinning the disc. Being made of metal it looks and feels well made. The major limitations of not allowing uploads to PC of old Minidiscs has been removed - a major benefit, plus it now supports 48khz MP3s, which the others didn't. The sound quality of MP3s which was slightly crippled on previous players has been fixed on this model.
Only criticism I have is that the MD/MP3 titles only appear on the remote not the main unit.
Possibly the last Minidisc recorder to be released but Sony have produced a cracker.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Top quality recorder, who wants an ipod?
This is a great bit of kit without question! Sony has obviously decided to aim this unit at the field recorder or amateur enthusiast rather than as an ipod alternative. However, if you do want to use it as that, it does remarkably well. I have managed to store about 600 tracks on a 1GB disc in very good quality. In fact, when I play a disc through my Hi-Fi it is leagues ahead of my other MP3 player sound quality wise. There are loads of other features on this unit too like the date stamp, CD quality PCM recording and the ability to upload recordings made on previous MD recorders in WAVE format without any kind of restrictions to your PC. I can't recommend it highly enough, it's great!

If you want to make very high quality audio recordings this is definitely for you. Build quality is superb with an excellent display, long battery life and loads of features. Buy it, you won't regret it.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Style or Substance, whichever - get a guarantee!
I'm a really big fan of MD and was very excited by Hi-MD. On paper the MZ-RH1 is by far the best and most versatile portable on the market, and supercedes its HiMD predecessors with some common sense corrections. I like the functionality of the machine, however my unit seems to have some problems: at least 30% of the time a disc is inserted in it will say 'Read Error' regardless of the disc's format, this has happened with most of my discs. On occasions it will stop in the middle of a track to tell me of a 'read error'. This is moderately annoying, however the most serious problem is that it performs the same sharade when i try to record: it will stop recording after a couple of seconds to say 'rec error' (although the disc is blank and properly formatted), it will then do the same thing about 3 times before recording continuously.

In fact, on reflection, i don't know why i've given it 3 stars. It is a true pain in the arse when i try and record lectures. One of the great things about Minidisc was its ruggedness. I had an Awia FM-80 which i bought in 2000, which didn't give me a single problem until it died 4 years later. I considered it to be AS RELIABLE AS CASSETTE. My experience of the MZ RH1 is that it is unreliable. which renders its marvellous functions useless. My experience has been quite negative, but only because i didn't complain/take the model back to the retailer quick enough. I think Sony have screwed up royal in its release of HiMD, (you only have to look at the headlines to see that the company is on the ropes). This is still quite a stylish piece of kit with full compatability, i would advise any prospective buyer to check the player for defects immediately after purchase. Otherwise, try and buy an old MD player.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great recorder, superb player.
I was torn between ipods, creative, i-river and upgrading my old Sharp MD recorder. I was after a top notch sound quality, with versatile recording options, so I went for the MZ-RH1. Safe to say, I wasn't disappointed. Great build quality too, with all the options for recording that I could possibly need. The software is a breeze too, I heard that it used to be awful, but it has gone without a hitch so far. I do recommend this machine to people who want excellent sound quality, and for those who need to record for various applications. 5/5
