- Noise cancellation good; sound quality poor
These phones are cheap so I didn't expect miracles from them and compared with my Sennheiser PX100's their sound quality is simply not up to par with thin treble and weak bass.BUT, you can't listen to much on the PX100's on a plane or train or in a busy street, but you can with the Philips. Their active noise cancellation circuitry is good at reducing low frequency rumble and ambient background noise (70% reduction is claimed, which is probably right).They also won't annoy your neighbours because sound leakage from these phones is very low. Since they at least let you listen without straining in noisy places, their poorish sound quality is not so critical in my view. I compared them with a sound isolation set from Shure, which I thought sounded much better and even provided better noise reduction (the noise cancellation versus isolation argument). BUT, they're £80, which is four times the price. So my advice is that for listening while on the move, particular to quieter forms of music, these will be fine. If you want phones that give good sound quality AND protection from ambient noise, then look elsewhere and to pricier models.

The headphones themselves are not bad at all, comfortable in ear headphones which wont fall out
i must say half of the noise cancellation is in the earphones themselves having a tight fit...
nobody else has mentioned but i feel this is important, when you turn it on it MAKES noise!! Infact i would'nt rate the noise cancellation that great, it reduces bassy low frequency stuff around you but thats about it, when its turned on its own noise comes into your ears.
if you made a white noise unit and attached it to some ear plugs, you'd have something similar as far as noise cancellation goes

OK, the bad - as said by other reviewers, the amplifier is cumbersome, there is some low level hiss and I'll add to that that the actual wires don't seem to hang too well and bunch up.
However, the amplifier really delivers! Yes, the bass is noticeable, but the amp delivers throughout the range seriously improving sound quality over any standard earphones or earbuds.
The low level hiss is only noticeable when you're not actually playing any music and is generated from the amp, so it can be stopped simply by turning the amplifier off.
There isn't too much you can do about the annoying wires - it seems that this is why the units are so well priced (to my mind), the manufacturer has cut corners where it's prudent to do so.
Finally, the noise reduction. That is SUPERB. As a test, I stood next to my kitchen TV with the volume on maximum - I even picked a particularly 'shouty' episode of Masterchef. With the earbuds in place, I could still make out what was being said very pretty clearly but once I turned on the music on the MP3 player's lowest setting I couldn't hear anything at all from the TV ... even with my head presssed up against the screen. For a sale price from a particular high street store of £9.94 I don't see how anyone can complain about these things.

I bought these earphones for use with my iPod and an upcoming flight. I immediately noticed the poor sound quality compared with the standard iPod earphones, very tinny and lots of hiss. When I actually tried them on the plane I could not detect any noise reduction at all. Basically a complete waste of money!

The title says it all really. OK, so they are much cheaper than the alternatives, and the noise cancelling is reasonably successful, but when you switch the noise cancelling circuit on, it introduces a high frequency hiss, which completely defeats the object of noise cancelling...
Also there's no clip on the noise cancelling box, so it pulls the earpieces out of your ears all the time. Grrrr....
The only upside is that the noise cancelling circuit also boosts the volume a bit which is useful if you have (for example) a recent 6th generation iPod Classic with the over-zealous EU volume limit.
Overall: Disappointed and saving my pennies for a decent set - the Sony ones seem to get good reviews...
