Electronics : Philips PET706 7" Portable Widescreen DVD player

- Excellent machine but...
I've been watching various DVD's on this machine for a month now and it really is excelling itself (I've just ordered a second one for the car). The thing I love is the idea of the car lighter power supply but have to say everytime I have tried to use it the cord has fallen out of the hole almost immediately. The battery is great: 2 hours from new at continuous run with fully screen brightness and max volume. The sound level is great for a reasonable quiet room but would be no use in and area with crowds or ont he train or tube (headphone sockets are available - in fact 2 headphone holes are avail incase you want to share the video with someone else on a second headphone set).
I particularly ike that I can plug my DV camera into the machine and get live pictures - very useful. Go for it and buy this thing. I loves it!

Excellent player for the price.
The picture quality is good, and the sound quality OK (quite tinny through the speakers, but good through headphones).
The unit is compact and well designed, and looks great.
The negative points are minor, but worth pointing out:
1. The remote control keys are quite small, and the lettering/numbering is hard to see unless in a well-lit room.
2. The aspect ratio defaults to widescreen on start-up, regardless of the setting used previously, and to change to 4:3 you need to select widescreen first, and then 4:3.
Rating: - Top-notch kit
Excellent value for money. The picture is superb on this light, well-designed unit. If following the remote, region-free, hack at the bottom of these reviews, ensure that you use the arrow keys on the unit itself, not the remote, for this to work.
Buy it. You can't go wrong.

Bought this unit from Amazon after reading loads of reviews of portable dvd players and am delighted with it so far. Picture quality is superb considering the price,sound through built in speakers is fine,it seems well built with a solid feel to it,it is also a very stylish looking piece of kit.All in all I doubt that I could have bought a better dvd player for what I paid,highly recommended!

I bought this for my 4 girls, the youngest of whom is 4. An earlier player I had bought did not have a Fast Forward button on the player - just on the remote. As all kids have a hard time finding remotes, they could not skip on to the stage of the movie they wanted, without it.
The Philips PET706 has that all-important FFWD ->| key and I am delighted with the purchase - great screen, good value and classy looking too.
The final bonus - able to watch the occasional US DVD (Region 1) by following the simple steps needed to set the PET706 to Region free. Codes in one of the earlier reviews (and also easily found on the Internet) worked first time.
Liked it so much, I will probably buy a second one - just to stop them fighting over the first one. Recommended!
