Electronics : Panasonic RR-US450E-H Digital IC Voice Recorder

- Brilliant for voice, not good for music
This recorder uses 2 AAA batteries and is supposed to last 30 hours or so (I've only just bought it, I didn't have time to test this claim). It allows you to copy sound from the device into your computer using a USB cable (supplied) and the supplied software, which converts the sound file into .wav format.
It is intended for voice recording, and has a feature Panasonic calls "zoom" which is supposed to make it easier to record the speaker from within a room full of people. It records voice quite well, and has decent playback features (play, pause, rewind, fast-forward, fast-rewind, fast-fast-forward, variable speed playback). You have 3 levels of sound qualitym and can set the mic to either low or high sensitivity. From personal experience, I was able to understand the lecturer in a recording I made with best sound quality, the zoom feature activated and mic. sensitivity set to high - I was 9 feet away from the lecturer while sitting in the front row of a lecture theater full of 100 (not altogether quiet) students.
Although voice quality is good, this device is evidently intended for voice recording ONLY. I tried to upload an mp3 song (converted into .wav), but the playback quality was awful through the headphones. Recording songs by connecting a CD player to the "microphone" jack in the device gave similarly bad sound quality. Also, recording a song played from a loudspeaker using the device's built-in microphone gave bad sound quality. Buy this device only if you don't want to play mp3s on it (or if you can live with the poor quality sound of songs). Other than that, it's a great device - compact, light and with long recording time and recording-related features that you won't find on an mp3 player.
