Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Lost for Words
thought they couldnt do better than the two previous pc versions, call of duty 3 was not released on pc, just the consoles, and i am awestrucked by the level of details, though, my pc isnt a gamers paradise, it still works fine, though a bit iffy sometimes, so its really recommended that you run it on a reasonably high spec pc if you want to get the best out of this game

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Better than Crysis
I was excited about Crysis - and disappointed. The graphics are spectacular if you have a beast of a PC but any other machine and they are merely 'nice'. Game play isn't that slick...

Call of Duty 4 has superb graphics and superior sound even with a relatively modest spec PC. The attention to detail is truly amazing and puts all other FPS's to shame.... stand next to the Abrams when it's firing - the ringing in your ears (I recommend using good headphones to maximise the effect)... the heat haze from the exhaust.. when in enclosed spaces your focus adjusts when you look at near and far objects.
Gameplay is excellent - yes it's linear but the 'get to cover' injury recovery is far better than med kits and, should you fail you get set back a couple of minutes at most - unlike Ghost Recon where your last checkpoint could be half an hour ago.

It's hectic, it's mental, it looks superb, it sounds amazing. It's not 'politically correct' and we have to suspend how we might feel about global conflict etc. The C130 gunship level is enormous fun - but the 'command' voices are saying things like 'get that guy' and 'I see little pieces everywhere'... hmmmm.... strictly a game for the adults who can take all that with a pinch of salt..

The cut scenes are the best I've seen, imaginative and atmospheric.

A great game - better than crysis...

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Truly a great game--what there is of it!
I do like an eclectic mix of games, and have recently been spending all my time playing quake 4 online. Then this came along....

What a great feeling this game gives you throughout; all the more so because i`m English so of course playing the SAS is a real blessing, as opposed to being american all the time. Let's hope devs now start to use other nationalities as well as it's far more interesting than playing ubiquitous Yanks.
The voice acting, even though they always use LANDANERS (there are other accents you know, although west country might not have the same feeling :)), is great too.

The missions are a real departure from the usual, and flying in the gunship taking out heat sources was superb.
The ghillie suit mission was properly sphincter clenching.

But oh crikey, how quick was it????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hopefully there will be expansions, add ons or sequels because the engine and look was superb, it was just over all too quick!

And multiplayer is rather mental :)

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Excellent, roll on the expansions
Not having played an FPS since the orignal Half Life many moons ago, I decided to give COD 4 a try off the back of a friends recommendation. Whilst I cant give an objective view of COD 4 relative to its competition (Crysis, Battlefield 2142 etc), I can say that COD 4 is one heck of a good game.

The single player has a stong (admittedly heavily scripted) storyline which does drag you in, with some well placed shocks along the way. Certainly its the best implemented storyline in any game I have played, its just a shame that as so many before me have noted, it ends far too soon. Still it leaves room for an expansion pack or two (fingers crossed). The AC-130 mission and the epic sniper mission are simply outstanding.

The multiplayer game is also very very strong, not perfect by any means, but a lot of fun and really quite addictive. It employs a trick similiar to many online RPG's, namely levels for advancement, that keeps you coming back for more, just to unlock that next weapon or perk to make you soldier that little bit stronger. Like any pvp style game, there are balance issues, some weapons clearly having advantages over others, but then it is always the way and it never seems to be a particular issue as each weapon always has a weakspot. You are competitive from level 1, as it should be, and its is a lack of experience and map knowledge that holds you back, not the weapons you have at the start.

On the downside, the COD 4 developers needs to put some work in to both provide more maps (the christmas variant of an existing map in the 1.4 patch was welcome) and fix some of the outstanding issues - spawn points and lack of spawn armor / immunity leads to the possiblity of (the lesser skilled) people camping spawn spots to gain kills, and helicopters are available too easily given the power they have.

Having put in the equivalent of a week or so online playing so far (the game tells you), I can say that the hacking issue is far more misconception than reality. I have encountered 3 people that have been hacking, but without exception they have been quickly identified and banned from the servers they were on. If you are unlucky enough to play on a server where hacking isnt being prevented (extremely unlikely), then there's only another 12,000 or so servers to choose from...

I say hacking is a misconception as there is a steep learning curve to the online game, certainly having completed the single player, even in the harder settings, doesnt prepare you for the level of skill, cunning and knowledge of maps that some of your opponents have. Frustration in being killed (especially when you see it coming but are beaten to the draw) often leads people to cry hack rather than admit they were well beaten or poorly placed. It can create the perception people are cheating -"how did you know I was there?", "no way you shot me on the run like that" but almost always its down to ability and experience or game quirks (in the hardcore "bullets hurt more" mode, being shot once in the foot will kill you, making finding good cover very hard). There are not many maps (16 or so, although a few are weak), and once you get the knowledge of them and the common camping spots of players, the apparently impossible becomes possible. Its not hacking.

All in all, this is a great game well worth the money. The single player is awesome but short, made up for by the endless replay time given by the free online servers. Incredible, roll on the expansions and more maps.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A very realistic modern war simulation.
New to call of duty series, tried the demo and wanted more so got the game. I must say the graphics and the realism are absolutely breathtaking.

The controls and gameplay are straightforward and customizable, most players will pick it up most aspects of the game within first 20 minutes of play, the campaign game is very fast paced and action packed.

The 4 sides in the game are USA, UK, RUSSIA and ARABS which makes for realistic and believable modern-day scenarios. The real gem of the game comes to life in Multiplayer, with a fantastic online community and lots of variations you wont get bored after you complete the campaign (which is relatively short, you could complete it within 1 day of solid non-stop gaming!)

Closest game to compare this to is probably Battlefield series, as it is very similar but in my opinion slightly better gameplay/graphics. Sadly you cant jump in a Tank or Plane in Call of duty but you can still call in Air strikes etc and you can customize your weapons and equipment to be a sniper or assault or sabotage etc

One or two other points... the Manual is a absolute joke and no help whatsoever, its so brief they may as well have printed it on the receipt! So if you are used to fat chunky manuals get the official strategy guide its excellent for new players! Second before i bought this game it was really hard to get a feel for the graphics because there seems to be a lack of media (photos/videos) on the web and only official trailers etc, but trust me the graphics wont let you down...they are very impressive (so long as your machine can handle it).

Overall...a great game, if you like action games that combine strategy and tactics or if you are fan of classics like PROJECT IGI, or COUNTERSTRIKE then chances are you will like this game.
