My son got this for his 9th birthday last week and I have had to prise him away most mornings before school and as soon as my husband comes home from work they are racing one another round numerous tracks, laughter ringing around the house.
Well worth the money - the wheel is useful but you can play without, in fact my daughter prefers using just the Wii remote.
The more you play, the more tracks and characters are unlocked. It's not just about winning the race, it's the fun aspect. I caught my children playing with a young boy from Japan yesterday - so even if you are on your lonesome you can choose an opponent from around the world.
I thoroughly recommend this game for all ages - buy it!

- A Wheel Revolution
The second you open the box you know that Mario Kart Wii is going to be one special game. The package comes complete with the new Wii Wheel accessory, a great innovation in gaming accessibility. The Wii Wheel allows anyone new to Mario Kart to be able to pick up and play the game with an element of ease. As for the game itself, it's traditional Mario Kart and the best way to play is as always multi-player. The game design is brilliant and you can have moments where you reach a peak of excitement approaching the finishing line way ahead of your friends only to be destroyed by the host of novelty weapons that your friends use against you. The online mode is excellent, 12 players can compete online whether they're your friends or a seasoned random from anywhere in the world it adds an extra element of competition to the game and allows the joys of the multi-player mode to be recreated all the time.
Having always been a fan of Mario Kart I was always going to look at this game through rose tinted glasses but it really doesn't disappoint. There are 32 tracks to choose from and 16 of those are from the Mario Kart back catalogue. There is the inclusion of motorcycles which provide the user with more vehicle choice, each vehicle having its own stats which can make or break your race. Even the time trials have taken a new approach allowing you to compare your scores online to your friends and to race against the ghosts of some of the best, a great way to improve your own racing ability.
I would highly recommend this game to be your next inclusion in your Wii games library. To unlock all characters and vehicles will take you time and the new online mode will keep you hooked long after you've said `just one more race.' Well done Nintendo.

This game is easily the most fun game on the Wii, this game together with Wii Fit is actually worth buying the console for.
I also have a PS3,NDS, had an Xbox and a PC and this game I can say is the best game i've ever played Online. It beats all the other 'good' online games like COD4, FIFA08,ETMAIN etc.
This game is simply just fun and races are so unpredictable you have to sometimes forget about trying to win and just enjoy the race. As a gamer I have to say this is the most fun and frustrating game online! frustrating because you can be in 1st place with a corner to go, get hit by a blue shell, then a red shell and then wacked by a bullet or someone with a star and end up 12th. That just adds to the entertainment.
Playing your friends online is great and it keeps a score of how you do against them. You can also just play random people online and there's a two player mode online from the same console that is split screen. Time trials are also fun to do with your friends and you can challenge them by sending your best times. Be warned though, this game is highly addictive and may take over your life!

bought this for the hubby's birthday, but me and the kids have had soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much fun with this game! Well worth the money!

Controls are great and you get a choice of about 5 control setups which should please everyone. the wheel is a great device to get new players into the game, while the nunchuck + wiimote option allows for far greater control. personally i find the wheel an atrocious option but it doesn't matter as there's a control setup for all tastes!
Most of the tracks are fun and there's a good mix from all the other MK series. Ghost Valley 2 i haven't played since SNES days and tearing up the competition in online play is just classic.
Online play is just unbelievable. i cannot believe how utterly lagless it is! you might see the odd character suddenly jumping on the track a small amount but this is very rare and makes virtually no difference from what ive seen.
Admittedly nintendos online system is rubbish compared to xbox's but the game itself really is like playing over a network.
So overall its great, and believe me you will almost certainly love it. Now the few niggles.
Main issue i have is giving the player options. For instance, one weapon which does not have much use is the blue shell. you get it when you're behind and it only really serves to ruin the person in first places race (unless a few others are bunched around 1st place). As to helping the person who launched get back into contention it pretty much does nothing.
So an option to disable blue shells would be a decent point to have.
Another point is the number of laps in a race. Luigis circuit, for example, can quite literally be a coin flip as to who wins. It needs way more laps to allow the better players to eak out a lead. i would say at least 7 laps.
It might not work but we should have that option to at least try it.
Voice chat....omg...what an oversight. wow. I cant believe they didn't integrate it and have an easy to be able to mute people who are being idiots. Parental controls exist so parents could make sure their young uns cant use voice chat no matter what to protect them from all the swearing that will go on.
Admittedly setting up voice chat is in fact very easy to do if you know a bit about computers and have the wii right by your computer or a laptop. simply install a program like skype/teamspeak/ventrilo, buy a headset with a microphone and start a conversation with all your mates who are going to be playing the game.
I cannot stress how much more fun this makes the game when playing against friends. if you nail them with a lush green shell or banana shot or pull off some sweet moves to nab first place at the last second you almost need to be able to let them know who the king at mario kart is etc etc
it makes a huge difference.
Ultimately theres no concrete reasons to not buy this game. a few cracks but thats it.
