Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - A picture paints a thousand words.....or does it?
Read the book, saw the film and was disappointed to see a mish mash of characters, locations and storyline. Never mind there are two more to get right!

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - The most disappointing book adaptation I have seen
This film may pass for entertainment if you haven't read the book but I felt hugely let down. Reading about the torturous birth of the movie, i suppose I shouldn't be surprised. Directors leaving, replaced and then replaced again is not a good omen. I found the characters thinly sketched, the acting so-so, the effects iffy (technical term) and the pacing off target. All the mystery, excitement and energy present in the novel is missing and the story is mangled beyond recognition and respect for the author. Finally and unforgivably, a 'Hollywood' ending replaces the original thereby removing one the essential plot themes. Like Frankensteins monster, this stitched together creation from seemingly disparate parts, lumbers about for a while before someone (presumably in the editing suite) decided enough was enough and spliced in the end credits.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Dust in the wind
Short Attention Span Summary (SASS)

1. A governing body called the Magesterium sets the rules and tells people what to think and when to think it.
2. Lord Asriel (Daniel Craig), Mrs. Coulter (Nicole Kidman) and Lyra Belacqua (Dakota Blue Richards) aren't very good at following rules.
3. In this world, a person's soul lives outside of their body in the form of an animal called a daemon.
4. Mrs. Coulter has one heck of an ugly soul, and a monkey on her back
5. Ashes to ashes is one thing, but when it's time for Dust it's a totally different matter
6. The Magesterium embarks on an ambitious "Save the Children" campaign
7. The result is an outbreak of separation anxiety and a bunch of missing kids
8. Lord Asriel sets off to get to the source of the Dust infestation
9. Mrs. Coulter tries to play Pygmalion with Lyra, but has her work cut out for her
10. Lyra is entrusted with the last surviving golden compass (alethiometer to those in the know) - no batteries required, but no instruction manual either.
11. Lyra sets off to find her missing friends with the help of the Gyptians (gypsies on water), witches (the pretty kind), an aeronaut (roguish Sam Elliot) and a cranky polar bear
12. A bear in need is a friend indeed
13. Bear fight!!!!!
14. Grand finale
15. Abrupt ending

I would recommend that you read the book before watching this, as the movie is merely a watered-down précis version and you'll have to fill in all the missing spaces yourself. What you'll get here is some average acting, but with lots of special effects and CGI for a very good viewing experience. Overall however, it's not so hot if you're going to be judging the book by its movie.

Book beats movie by a landslide. Rated: 3.5 stars

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - good, but not as good as the book.
this is a fairly well acted film. excellent special effects, good cast, even dakota blue richards isn't too annoying in the lead role, but is nowhere near as good as the book, which i only read after seeing the film. the film is bassically a watered down version of northern lights. can't understand all the fuss that the church are making, and them calling a boycott is ridiculous. nothing here to offend anyone. mind you, i never really understood their anti harry potter thing either, all harmless fun in my opinion, but that's another argument for another time. in short, if you liked the harry potter films, although this isn't in the same class, you should enjoy this.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Never read the books and I wasn't sure I would like it.
So I was pleased to find it was a very enjoyable family movie. The story is fairly simple, however the alternate versin of our world that it is set it takes a while to get to understand, patience will reward the viewer. The film doesn't treat the viewer like an idiot like the early harry potter films, it expects you to pay attention and keep up. The acting is mostly very good and the effects vary but a mostly of high standard.
I wont try and explain the story but as a simple fantasy adventure it has some sinister under currents.
