Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - I'm sorry, I just didn't care for it
Our lad Will plays a military hero, a devoted family man, dog lover - and to top it all - one of the world's top virologists.

Single handily he takes on marauds of photophobic, blood-sucking zombies who have taken over a deserted Manhattan. There's lots of awe-inspiring SFX to wile away the time.

Oddly enough, the head zombie reminds of me of a fella I once met on the No. 19 bus in London from Sloane Square to Finsbury Park Station.

Small world isn't it?

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - I am a Leg End
I wholeheartedly agree with Amazon's opening review of this movie. For the first hour or so this is epic, wonderful, suspenseful stuff. Will Smith (always worth watching) is gripping as the sole survivor of a plague ravaged world. His loneliness is portrayed so clearly and cleverly, i.e. watching old recordings of news programmes just for some background noise, and the underlying knowledge that there is something nasty out there in the dark adds to a growing feeling of unease.
And then it all sort of falls apart in the second half. Now I am a big fan of Bob Marley but even I can see that good songwriter and natty dread wearer that he was, his songs can't actually help a virologist cure a plague. The CGI zombies are on the whole laughable and look as though they have been hacked together on a home computer.
So a triumph up to a point, but I suggest you turn off the DVD when you reach that point. The "animated comics" that come as extras on this DVD are bizarre and, to be frank, a bit pants.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Gripping!
I thought this film was brilliant. The obligatory shot of an empty Picadilly Circus a la 28 Days Later just doesn't quite cut it.This is one film where the big budget really worked. All those empty shots of New York must have cost a fortune and really conveyed the feeling that Smith was all alone in the city. In that context the relationship he had with his dog was the only thing sustaining him.

I agree with the comments below abouut the 'monsters' climbing up walls but other than that I found it really believable. It is gripping, and you really identify with Smith. I didn't understand the comments below about him using his own lab - it seemed well equipped so what's the problem??

My one criticism would be the ending - I didn't really understand why he did what he did - don't want to give too much away!

Highly recommended!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Scared me often
Thought this would have been predictable and in someways it was in someways not. There are shocks, there is tension and there are sad bits.

I always feel films like this don't need to be disected in great detail, it kept me quiet for 2 hours and at times I was totally engrossed.
Get it for a wet aftrnoon, buts its better watched in the dark.

Dont look for too much symbolism just enjoy - I did.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - 3rd time lucky... Damn you Hollywood!
I read the book before seeing the film & my review is based on this. I hoped that being the 3rd Hollywood take on the book it would be 3rd time lucky at creating greatness... The film didn't remain true to the book on a fundamental level - this is a vampire story although many observers seem to believe they saw a zombie film. The film is stilted, and runs at a pace similar to the book but borders close to tedium; during a cinema veiwing all I could hear from the audience was coughing and people rearranging their posture - not a captivating response! The CG 'vampires' were poor and the idea of awakened 'vampires' was not explored to its logical conclusion. Hollywood needs to deal with the concept of having an apocalypse story where America does not triumph. On the positive, great city scapes and build-up to 'the coming collapse' and Will Smith does a good job with what he has to work with. Worth a watch, but not 5 stars.
