this is my first barbara erskine novel , and as soon as I read the synopsis , i felt i just had to read it... I finished it in a day ... can't put it down, the story is so engaging , feel a bit long sometimes in the middle , but it soon pick up and just hooked you till the end... I'm now excitedly browsing for more of her book...

Like others before, I too was very reluctantly disappointed in this book as it did repeat the same things over and over again. The characters always seemed to be doing the same things but in different locations. The best BE novel to my mind was 'Lady of Hay' and I have read and own them all. Of course, a lot of research must have gone into this and it IS very entertaining and yes I DID find it difficult to put down - but all the time getting more and more exasperated by the repetition .... perhaps I was waiting for something new to happen?

Absolutely fab! One of Barbara Erskine's best novels. Wonderful story full of history, supernatural, fiction with elements of truth all based round a truly amazing heroine. Very highly recommended.
This was the first book I read from this author and I have since worked my way through all her other published work.
Can't wait for her new book out later this year!

I wanted to give this three stars as the passages dealing with Matilda's life are excellent, but this is let down by the plot set in the present day. The Heroine Jo despite appearing to be a 'modern' woman is just too wet. She spends the entire book being passed around the male characters and more often than not being abused by them. The irony is that for all the constraints of her time Matilda comes across as the stronger more modern woman. One thing that made me laugh was the amount of coffee the modern day characters drink, every other page someone is either making coffee or drinking it. It's hard to believe they are all so susceptible to hypnosis with the amount of caffeine racing round their systems. Disappointing but the author shows promise.

I was unable to put this book down. It had me enthralled right to the end. I can well imagine that were I not living in a cosy, modern house, I would have been seriously unnerved if reading this book alone at night. I absolutely loved this novel and would highly recommend it.

I had to review this, despite the many reviews it's got already, because it exasperated me so much. It's mind-candy. It's quite good quality mind-candy, but there's not much nourishment to be had from it. It never quite had me hiding under the covers, because I just couldn't believe in it all.
Maybe that was because I'm pretty familiar with its setting. Now, if you're going to set a book somewhere real, shouldn't you be true to that location? Take it from me: Manningtree doesn't have a cute Georgian rectory. Far from it: the rector was long ago banished to a 1980's box. But everyone knows that country towns are quaint and insular and have Georgian rectories, and so the rector here must have one too. What this tells us is that this is a book based ... Read More:

to anyone who didn't find this novel of B.E.'s gripping - I just gotta say that I DID! To the point where I really DID "accidently" fall asleep with the light on for several nights, till my then 30-something emotions settled down again!. Even though on first reading I frankly found the story a bit too hair-raising for comfort, I was fascinated enough to skip through some of the scarier scenes and read the final chapter. It may have been years till I could read this book again (determined to prove to myself that I could master my own imagination) but I'm pleased to say that I HAVE done so - and though it's not-so-scary to me now - it's still an impressive historical/modern day romantic "chiller". So settle down with your teddy bear at close hand - and enjoy!

Never having read a Erskine novel before I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. The detail on Egypt was interesting and linked in well with the story, and the two stories of Anna and Louisa worked well. However, this has got to be the worst ending of any book I have ever read. I had read 500 pages wondering how they would finally deal with the priests, for what, for it to be left to my imagination..what a cop out! The characters were hurriedly finished off or killed off with no explanation of their motives or actions. If the author could not think of an ending for the book she should not have started it.
