Brisingr (Inheritance Cycle)

After reading Eldest (and being heartily disappointed), I comforted myself with the thought that things could only get better. Well, they did. But not by much.

The first sentence of the book shattered my hopes. I had expected that being older might have cured Paolini of his verbosity, but sadly not. The first sentence contained the word 'wherein'. Enough said.

The first half of the book was not much better than Eldest. Nothing happened, and it seemed to lack fluidity. The reader is also presented with a lot of pointless information. There are also the chapters devoted to the dwarves in the later half of the book, which are (to be blunt) mind-numbing.

Eldest

this book is an excellent read I enjoyed it immensely!
the part were he visited the elves was a bit boring but the battle afterwards made up of it. Very interesting plot line but when he tries to romance with Ayra you just want to smash your head into a wall yelling "shut up you stupid person!" Its embarrassing. his training is good reading but he really mucks up his relationship with Ayra. appart from that bit the plot has many interesting twists and turns and it makes up for a lot.

all in all a brilliant read!

Eragon (Inheritance Cycle)

For any fantasy/sci-fi fan, Eragon will contain a lot of familiar material. However, it is well written and has a fast-moving pace which makes up for its derivative nature. Although the story and characters are not new, it is an interesting (if not particularly thrilling) read.

On the down-side, the dialogue is very wooden and a lot of the description is long-winded and verbose. I suppose we can excuse Paolini, seeing as he was quite young when he wrote it.

Altogether, a good read (if you can stand the none-too-subtle echoes of Star Wars and LOTR).

This is a warining to anyone who enjoyed the books, do not purchase this audio cd. I have currently listened and was very impressed with the Gerrard Doyle version of Eragon and Inheritance. So I was expecting the same standard of interpretation with this cd, I was sadly mistaken. Kerry Shale has done the book an injustice, mispronounced the ancient words, called Angela - Angella, Eragon sounds like a cowboy from the old west and Roran sounds like a surfing dude!!! After the first disc, I just switched it off and will be buying the Gerrard Doye version - the true version.

"Eragon" and "Eldest" (Inheritance Cycle)

I'm not sure if that is a word that you would use to describe a book but these two are simply amazing. Many reviews have criticised they style in which Christopher Paolini writes but I personally think he is fantastic! I'm a very busy person and love reading so it is essential that I have a book that is gripping or I will not take time out to read it! These books certainly fill that criteria. The phrase "You cant put it down!" is taken lightly in the reading world to emphasise how good a book is but these two books you cannot actually put down. They are definitely up there with the likes of Harry Potter undoubtedly! I pre-ordered (yes call me a reading freak) I'll say that again pre-ordered the next one as soon as I could. Inheritance Books 1-3

Mix together equal parts "Star Wars" and J.R.R. Tolkien, then add a generous helping of Anne McCaffrey's dragon-riders and a few random shreds of Garth Nix.

Obviously originality is not Christopher Paolini's strong suit. But that's only one of the problems with "Eragon," "Eldest" and "Brisingr," the first three books of Paolini's Inheritance series -- while there's some promise in Paolini's first book, the second and third are lifeless slogs of painfully pompous plotlessness that occasionally rev up into a battle.

Whilst Kerry Shale does get some of the voices right - by which I mean of course as I imagine them to be - too many others sound like pantomime characters - heavily accented and exaggerated. However, this is not the biggest failing of the audio CD. What is not obvious is that this is an abridged version of the book. As such a lot of chapters have been left out including some of the most exciting ones. If you have not read the book you are being shortchanged, if you have you are in for disappointment. 2-3 years ago I was browsing the selves in the public library looking for some chunky fantasy to kill my spare time on. I didn't think for one minute that I was checking out something that would keep me so on the edge of my seat and have me practically obsessed with checking for release dates of Eldest and now Brisingr. The trilogy has been amazingly un-put-downable so far and I class it as totally unmissable for any fantasy/dragon/adventure/quest enthusiast out there. Read this!!!
