I am working my way through classic literature and this is a must. I loved the films and I did enjoy the book but found the characters much younger than their years and if you compare this to another civil war book Gone With The Wind the imaturity of these characters is quite unbelievable. Once you accept all the limitations it is a joyful read and the characters are all lovable. I would recommend this book but I am surprised it is so highley praised.

If you liked Little Women and Little Men, you'll be rewarded for reading Jo's Boys because you'll find out what happened to Nat, Dan, Nan, Emil, Tom, Demi, Daisy, Bess, Jo, Meg, Amy and Laurie in another ten years.
Jo is transformed into a famous novelist who spends her time trying to hide from her public with little luck. It's quite humorous. Plumfield is now a college. Nat goes abroad for advanced training in music and learns other lessons better. Dan seeks to build a new world in the West and runs into the consequences of his quick temper. Emil has a most remarkable adventure on the high seas that will remind many of classic sailing tales in the 19th century. Nan is interested in medicine and little else. Demi turns out to be ... You don't have to be a girl to enjoy this masterpiece. The innocence in the tale is heartwarming, interwined with 19th century romance, with little homilies here and there, it is incomparable. The emotion that Alcott put into the story is obvious and this makes the book really shine.
Little Women -----> A great representation of women of the 19th century, showing how important money and respectability seemed. The novel uses brilliant imagery and fun characters, who really lift your heart. The story focuses on a family, namely 4 grils: Meg, Amy, Beth and Jo, who had money, yet lost it and despite all soon realise that money is not everything, as the rich seem up able to enjoy themselves and are still unable to buy one thing - they cannot buy love.
The Language is hard at first, but once you get used to it the narrative soon comes alive and you find yourself unable to stop reading! The characters are truely superb, as your find yourself reflected in them all and become attached to each, wanting the best for ... Read More:

Louisa May Alcott is best known for her classic coming-of-age novel "Little Women." But she tackles an entirely different part of growing up in "An Old Fashioned Girl," the story of a country mouse living with a wealthy urban family in late 19th-century America. It gets rather prissy and moralistic in places, but has a measure of earnest charm.
Teenage Polly Milton is arriving in the city (New York?) for the first time, to stay with her uncle and aunt. She immediately sticks out because of her prosaic clothing and lack of chic. Her cousin Fan Shaw (also about fourteen) is already dressed like a young woman, and hangs out with a gang of shallow, trendy girls. On the other hand, Polly befriends old ladies, sings Scottish airs, and ... Read More:

Good Wives picks up a few months after Little Women closes. Meg is about to get married and the other girls are on the brink of womenhood. It isn't all plain sailing though as the hopes and dreams of the girls aren't realised exactly as they thought they would be and tragedy strikes. I must have read this book a thousand times and I cry every time. Having said that, it is a heartwarming book and I every time I read it, I enjoy it even more!

Having not read Little Women in many decades, I was drawn back to the book by my love of visiting the Alcott family home, Orchard House, in Concord, Massachusetts. I plan to re-visit that wonderful home and want to refresh my recollections of Little Women before doing so. By the way, if you have a chance to visit Orchard House, I strongly recommend that you do. Your sense of Little Women will expand.
As I re-read these delightful pages, I found myself comparing Little Women to Pride and Prejudice, that outstanding work that captures human psychology so well. The comparison made me see new depths in Little Women that convince me that Little Women is by far the stronger work.
But my biggest reaction was how modern the views in the book are. Women ... Read More:

At some point rather trashy, but still makes a classic tale of love and obstacles, greed, revenge and drama. It has all the contents for a enjoyable romantic story.

"Rose In Bloom" is definitely my favourite Alcott. Contrary to some opinions, I think it's better than its predecessor, "Eight Cousins". Rose is 18, having just returned from a round-the-world tour with Dr. Alec and Phebe. To her cousins, she declares her intention of going into philanthropy after three months in society.
She finds that "Prince" Charlie has a drinking problem, and has also fallen in love with her. Meanwhile, pressured to respond to his advances, she tries desperately to cure him of his habit.
On the other hand, Archie has fallen deeply in love with Phebe, and she with him. The majority of the Campbell family do not approve. (Rose, of course, supports them staunchly, as does Mac.)
Then, of course, Rose finds another of her ... Read More:
