A young mischievous boy called Max decides to seek out fun and dons his white wolf suit, but as a result of his ill behaviour gets sent to bed without supper. When in his room, it is unclear whether it his imagination, a dream or magic that send Max into adventure, but whatever the cause, a whole world grows from inside his bedroom, sending the young boy into the land of Where the Wild Things Are...

The pictures are unique and absolutely luscious; the text is simple but so very clever and the package as a whole is timeless. Everything about this book is awe-inspiring and memorable, so there is little reason to think that any child from Reception to Year 2 would not enjoy it and can easily lend itself to discussion and analysis ... My brother was given this set of little books by our uncle, who lived in the States, when it was first published in 1962. He was four years old. It became a firm favourite in our home. My brother - the original recipient of the books - now lives in New York, and I asked him to send me copies first of all for my son, and then for the children of friends. I am still ordering copies and distributing them around the world - so far to New Delhi and Cape Town. The appeal of Maurice Sendak's enduring illustrations is universal and the miniature library of little books holds the same attraction now as it did when first published almost 40 years ago. In our family the original set is a bit of an heirloom.

This book haunts me. I bought it weeks ago and it still lies by my bed. I cannot bring myself to put it on a shelf. Most nights I flick through it, selecting one or two pages to pore over. I read its entirety maybe twice a week hoping to peel another layer of meaning, another allusion. Often it defeats me. There is more to this picture book of 359 words and 9 single and 11 double page illustrations than the sum of its parts.

The story of 9-year-old Ida rescuing her baby sister from goblins with the aid of the magical music from her wonder horn is timeless and enjoyable and could happily slip in to any century's fairy tale tradition. Chicken Soup with Rice: A Book of Months (The Nutshell Library)

Researchers constantly find that reading to children is valuable in a variety of ways, not least of which are instilling a love of reading and improved reading skills. With better parent-child bonding from reading, your child will also be more emotionally secure and able to relate better to others. Intellectual performance will expand as well.
