This book is indeed fantastic to read, it is well researched and gives a slightly more wholesome view of what our boys are up against. My only criticism, not meaning to take anything away from the author, is that the book is not written as if a soldier is talking, but rather from a third person perspective, which is good but not my personal choice (after reading sniper one). This by no means takes away from the value of the book and its a very good read, for anyone who wants a bit of a clue as to what's really going on in afghanistan.

Bomber Boys: Fighting Back 1940-1945

by: Patrick Bishop

March 03, 2008
It is very easy to lament the work done by Bomber Command in the mid to end years of the Second World War in Europe. This book does just that. But it also delves into the hearts of those who flew the bombers, the emotions of those who let loose the bomb doors, the feelings of those who shot at night-fighters. And the book's great achievement is in presenting a view that not only helps us understand the great personal sacrifice these men made, but the even greater emotional sacrifice they have suffered since the end of the war.
With some glaring grammatical mistakes, the book's editors should be sacked, but all in all, this is a highly endearing yet incisive account of one of the ugliest aspects of war, yet an aspect that greatly hastened the end of the ... Read More:

Fighter Boys: Saving Britain 1940

by: Patrick Bishop

March 29, 2004
I struggled through the prologue, fearing a book stuffed of the same old cliches, to be pleasantly surprised at having discovered a real gem of a book.

By extensive use of personal contemporary accounts of those actually involved in the fighting, Patrick Bishop succeeds in peeling back the romantic veneer surrounding the aircrew to reveal the harsh reality of their existence in the long, hot Summer of 1940 - the dread of hearing the dispersal telephone ring, the terror & confusion of the dogfight and the utter exhaustion brought about by unrelenting action are laid bare for all to see.

This book doesn't set out to make heroes of the RAF pilots involved in the country's defence in 1940 but it does show the extraordinary job done by these ... Read More:

A Good War

by: Patrick Bishop

May 01, 2008
A unique and memorable read, Patrick Bishop's A Good War is a beautifully crafted and at times epic tale that recreates the sense and feel of those fighter pilots who strove and died and endured in the Second World War - from the Battle of Britain to North Africa and the conquest of Europe. Bishop's protagonist is a flawed and human - and heroic - individual, at times as unlucky in combat as he is in love. He is a rounded and compelling character who carries one through the tale and leaves one at the end of the book lamenting the loss of a good friend. True to Bishop's trademark writing, A Good War is impressively well researched and authentic to the spirit and facts of that time. Highly recommended.

The Provisional I.R.A.

by: Patrick Bishop, Eamonn Mallie

June 17, 1988
This book remains as fresh as the day it was written. I read it recently and everything in it stands true. Mr. Bishop and his colleague describe the history and ethos of the IRA in a manner which propels the reader to the conclusion that they will not give up until they achieve a united Ireland. Mr. Bishop and his colleague do not pull their punches and avoid taking sides and politicians who wish to settle this problem should first read this volume. It makes grim but engrossing reading.
