From beginning to end this novel is engaging. Having only read one other of hers (Tipping The Velvet) I will certainly be going on to read her others. It's easy enough to find out plot details about this so I won't go into that. What I will say is that her writing style is fantastic. I was pleased not to have known anything about the novel before I read it, as I do believe any spoilers will impact upon your enjoyment. All you need to know is that all of the characters are fabulous, evocative narrative really pulls you into Victorian London.
The time is 1862 and we are with a mix of characters from all classes. The way Waters moves between the different strata's of society is impressive, making the journey both enjoyable and ... Read More:

The setting of the story in the fog and snow of london all add to the chilling atmosphere of this novel. I found the theme of spiritualism intriguing and the whole story compelling however I have to agree with some of the other reviews - Fingersmith is better.

There was no doubt in my mind that i was going to buy this book once i had finished the other sarah waters book i was reading. But i did see that this particular one, had been given mixed reviews. Its true that this book is slightly different to her other novels, but this is not a insult! There are many characters in this one which only enrichens the story, and i fell in love with all of them. The way that their lives all interlinked was wonderful, and the time in which it is all set is superbly conveyed. I feel asthough Waters has simply raised her game with this one and i shall look forward to future releases, as i always have. The Night Watch will certainly have you gripped from start to finish. It seems to have fueled my addiction and i hope that ... Read More:

My Sarah waters virginity was lost with "Fingersmith" (which i adored), so i naturally moved onto Tipping the Velvet. Unlike Fingersmith, there is only one character to focus on. Not that this was a bad thing however; in fact it made the book more intense. You could completly induldge in Nans thoughts, feelings, experiences and heart break. It was a deliciously smooth read which i found impossible to put down and shall re-read over an over. If you want to give your mind something to devour, then let it be Tipping the Velvet. You wont be dissapointed.

Mrs Taylor never disappoints and this time gives us a wonderfully well-observed, compassionately funny glimpse into the lives of the inhabitants of a faded seaside harbour, shortly after the war. If their lives are mundane, there still seems to be a lot going on, all observed by dreadful, bed-ridden Mrs Bracey, proprietor of the second-hand clothes shop - who doesn't miss a thing from her upstairs window. Elizabeth Taylor paints a wonderful picture of female friendship between Beth, distracted lady novelist/ terrible housewife/neglectful mother and her nextdoor neighbour Tory - who is Beth's old schoolfriend, chic, divorced, and playing a dangerous game with her best friend's husband.
Nothing happens and everything happens - behind the harbour's net ... Read More:
