I discovered this book in a second hand shop and it has been read 100s of times in our house. My son with autism loves this book because of its repetitiveness and drama and clear story!

I had this book as a child and now my two children (3 & 5) love to read it too.

The picures are clear and very amusing. Children can easily work out what is going on from the colourful illustrations and the text is very simple, meaning that they can soon read it for themselves. We read it together a few times, and now they can do it themselves, with great excitement as the bear gets more and more frustrated in the shop, and we can all relate to that!

"The Berenstain Bears and the Spooky Old Tree" is not exactly a Halloween story, but Stan and Jan Berenstain are certainly in the spirit of the October holiday in this story. Three little bears go off to investigate a very spooky old tree which leads to a subterranean lair that sure looks a lot more like a spooky fun house than you would think you might find inside a tree; and your young readers will be surprised what great sleeping figure the three little bears find down below. I especially like the expressions of terror on the face of the little bears when they finally decide it is time to make a quick exit from the Spooky Old Tree. A story for children which I remember from my own childhood - a book I read time and time again which I have finally tracked down to buy for my own children. I really do not think anyone will be disappointed if they buy this book - it will probably amuse the adults too!

Inside Outside Upside Down (Beginner Books)

I bought this book because we already had (and looooovvve) 'The Bears in the Night', and I saw this one recommended as an early book to read when learning to read. The only problem was that my son found the book too easy, and although my children love the book, it does not have great value as a reader. Once it has been read once by the child it is easy enough to memorise. Whether the book is one to buy or not depends on your requirements. It is probably very useful for 3-4 yr olds. The pictures are a big help in deducing the meaning of the words, whether or not this is a good thing depends on you and your child.

I picked a couple of this series (including this one)up recently in the US and my 4 year old loves them - I think she even vaguely gets the idea. They both get to the 'principle' without being too slushy (for a 4 year old) or too preachy.
