Pies and Prejudice: In Search of the North

by: Stuart Maconie

February 07, 2008
For the most part, this book is entertaining and witty. Maconie's enthusiam for his subject is contagious and the stuff you are learning is genuinely interesting. Then he stops writing about Lancashire and starts on Yorkshire.

I can't help but think that this book would have been better if Maconie had stuck to what he knows, ie: the west side of the Pennines. Quite how, for example, he can make various claims about 'professional Yorkshiremen' (a dying breed anyway) and deny the existence of the Lancastrian equivalent is an unforgivable oversight that kind of gives away where Maconie's loyalties lie. They are not called 'professional Lancastrians' as such, but how many 'professional Scousers' and 'professional Mancs' could we name? ... Read More:

Cider with Roadies

by: Stuart Maconie

April 07, 2005
Stuart Maconie is brighter than a button - witty, angry about things you should get angry about and is extremely articulate.

This book is a great piece of autobiography; a history of thatcher's Britain and a entertaining romp through the history of modern pop music.

Fun, funny and cleverly written with a mature writing style that makes for a fabulous read.

3862 Days: The Official History of Blur

by: Stuart Maconie

July 16, 1999
This book is fantastic. I've been a fan of Blur since 1992, and this book is perfect for any long serving fan, but also offers tremendous insight for the uninitiated many, who will put this book down having gained a whole new idea of who Blur are. The detail included doesn't decrease its readability, and is credit to Maconie for his editing from what must have been hundreds of hours of interviews. A Fitting book for a top band.

James - Folklore: The Official History

by: Stuart Maconie

November 09, 2000
From their strange beginnings in 70's Manchester this teenage band formed with no money, no real musical competence but with a clear sense of purpose. You know the ending because know James but I defy any reader to have guessed the various stages that James went through to become what they are today - the story about Manchesters best kept secret becoming a regular stadium filler and a number one album best seller. It took a good few years though. Insighful and powerful. If you're a music fan buy it and read it. If you're a James fan buy it, read it, put it away and read it again next year.

Buyer beware .... it may make you buy James albums that you've not already got.
