I was arranging a visit to Mousehole, Cornwall and whilst researching my visit (incredibly sad, yes - well informed, yes) I stumbled across Thomas' connections with this pretty village. A friend of his, Wyn Henderson, owned the now demolished 'Lobster Pot' harbourside. Thomas delighted in the village and proclaimed that he too, wanted to live somewhere like that. Llareggub, the fictional village Thomas describes is based on another harbourside village in Wales, but the influence of Mousehole on Thomas' creative thoughts is distinctly recognisable to anyone who has visited it and whilst I was reading, I imagined Mousehole through his eyes - the buildings and characters so incredibly vivid. I wonder if Lionel Blair, erstwhile performer on Give Us A Clue, ever listens. This was the programme in which contestants had to mime a film, book or play, in silence and with hilarious results. As Humph's introductions to the radio version remind us, the Clue version differs in two important aspects...
I am a total Clue addict, but I nearly died listening to this tape. No record collection should be considered complete without having Graeme singing the words of "Meet the Flintstones" to the tune of "My Way".

The Right Honourable Jim Hacker and his Permanent Secretary Sir Humphrey Appelby cross swords again in these hilarious yet worryingly plausible accounts of British political life. Hacker tries to reform local government, the education system, and the Arts Council grant, but Appelby is always on hand to put obstacles in his path. Each tries to outmanoevre the other, with implied threats, cunning and timely leaking of information all the order of the day. As usual, the battles between the two are marvelously crafted, and beautifully executed by Paul Eddington and Nigel Hawthorne. Wonderful stuff that has me laughing every time. Especially the new diet of "net breadsticks" for the National Theatre...

There are four stories in this collection - all very entertaining and done to perfection by a stellar cast, including the excellent Timothy West playing the reprehensible Rumpole and the incomparable Prunella Scales playing his bossy but long-suffering wife, Hilda. The stories are:
"Rumpole and the Primrose Path", in which Rumpole is alerted to shady activities involving the sudden death of a patient and the possible involvement of nursing staff at the Primrose Path nursing home, where he has gone to convalesce after a heart attack.
"Rumpole and the Vanishing Juror", where a murder leaves a little boy orphaned. But who murdered the mother and why has the child been snatched away and hidden? And where has Rumpole's most promising ... Read More:

I was introduced to Hancock by my Grandparents many years ago when I the first heard The Blood Donor, being the most famous (but not in my opinion the best) show - from there on I was hooked and the collector's edition box sets that were eventually released were a dream come true!
Supporting Hancock throughout the first series were Sid James, Bill Kerr, Kenneth Williams & Moira Lista.
16 episodes were recorded by the BBC for the first series, broadcast between November 1954 & February 1955, however, only 10 survived at the time the box set was produced. 5 CD's in individual sleeves include two shows per CD, and contain the following episodes in chronological order:

Have His Carcase begins with a bang when Harriet Vane finding the body of a man with his throat cut on a beach near the seaside resort of Wilvercombe. Unable to drag the body to a safer location and aware that the tide is coming in, she settles for taking photographs of the body before heading off to find a telephone so she can alert the authorities. Unfortunately, by the time she's able to do so, the tide has come in and the body disappeared. Without a body, there can be no inquest but this doesn't unnecessarily worry the local police who believe that the victim, Paul Alexis (a dancer come gigolo) committed suicide. However Harriet is not so sure and when Lord Peter Wimsey comes to offer support, he too finds it difficult to buy into the theory. And then the body finally ... Read More:
