I was recommended this CD by a friend. I have to confess I was cynical at first but then was hooked very early on. The tales themselves are enough to chill the spine but the reader, Stephen Critchlow, certainly created the atmosphere. He has a wonderfully enticing and hypnotic voice which I think is perfect for such a medium as horror. I was transfixed and even pulled over on the M3 to listen to the end.Why isn't Stephen Critchlow a household name? More please....

Very good ghost story, similar to M.R. James I thought. But the reading is great. Fine actor. If you even *think* you might like ghost stories this is a must.
I agree totally with the previous reviewer: choose a wintry night with a gale outside blowing against the windows (a glass of whiskey seems to do no harm), light a fire, turn out the light, and listen.
But not if you're of a particularly nervous disposition....

Definately not the best in the series but still, brilliant book.
Although it doesn't establish an extemely strong connection between Grubbs and his family it just seems to make it all the more shocking in chapter 2. From there the book builds up with more and more mystery until the explosive finale, I would say the Demonata series is definately better than The Saga. So yeah 5/5 Awesomes

......is still a rose so they say well to my mind the same goes for paedophilia!! this book glories in sado-masochism and sex between adults and by young children (Oh a few ghosts thrown in as a nod to the genre). Horror yes but not in the accepted way, If it were written by any other author it would be slated and rightly for perversion.
The Demonata series is fantastic, truly gripping and every novel is fascinating from start to end. Demon Apocalypse, the 6th book in the series is no exception - while i think i still prefer the previous one, Blood Beast, Demon Apocalypse is epic in it's scale and was immensely enjoyable. In essence it is a coming together of the three main characters - Grubbs, Kernel and Bec all meeting for the first time.
This is also one of the darkest of the series so far. Following staright on from where Blood Beast left off, we rejoin Grubbs in the plane, confronting Lord Loss. As things progress we meet Beranabus, a fascinating, immensely powerful character. His duty above all is to protect the human race, always ... Read More:

I thought it was an incredible book because of the vocabulary, the adventure. I really liked the main character and can't wait to read the second book!

From the first moment in book one, Lord Loss, when Grubbs Grady encounters the Demonata and their evil minions it is obvious to the reader that Darren Shan books are from a different dimension. You really have to read them with an open mind, and a slightly twisted one too! The heroes are constantly changing, from Grubbs in book one to Kernel Fleck in book two, back to Grubbs in three and then Bec in some of the later episodes. Whoever is in charge you can absolutely guarantee a frightening ride through another world, which Shan depicts so very well. As far as teenage horror goes this is about as entertaining as it gets. You cannot compare it to the real horror masters, such as James Herbert, Shaun Hutson, Brian Keene or Conrad Jones, but they are truly entertaining, ... Read More:

A must have for lovers of ghost stories in general and particularly those of M.R. James. Superbly read by the great Derek Jacobi who really makes the stories come alive. A real treat.
