Fantastic book - interesting reading the reviews of some of the other people: It seems the positive reviews are mainly from British people, and this is probably because Stephen Fry is so unbelievably English that to an American or an Austrian it may seem like puerile drivel. Being German, it took me a while (30 years!) to get used to the humor, but trust me, it really is EXCRUCIATINGLY funny.

This is a very interesting and enjoyable History of Classical Music on four CDs. It contains excerpts from over 50 pieces of Western Music.
I have read some musical history before but I found that this set of CDs dealt more thoroughly with the thousand years of development from around 600 AD to around 1600 AD.
The CDs are are follows:
CD1 The Early, Medieval, and Renaissance Periods
This includes Gregorian Chant; Ambrosian Chant; the Dorian, Phrygian and Lydian Modes; Hildegard of Bingen; the Gothic Age; the Motet; the troubadour tradition; Guillaume de Machaut; the Madigral - Landini; Dufay and Ockeghem; the Agincourt Carol - 1415; the Renaissance - Palestrina; the High Renaissance in England; the French ... Possibly the greatest rock writer of all time, possibly the natural heir to Wittgenstein, possibly the greatest book ever written about Pop music.
Through a car ride with an image of Kylie and a collection of lists Paul Morley, former NME journalist and cultural impresario, charts the progress and connections found in popular music over the last four decades. Paying particular attention to the leftfield and the near unknown, Morley not only directs us to the music we either love or should love, he also shows us how to best appreciate this musical menagerie and goes further than most in depicting the importance and purpose of this music in the listeners life.

I've been to Glastonbury seven times, although not for a few years. As everyone knows it's a very, very special festival. When I used to return to work after 5 days of mayhem my life suddenly felt incomplete and I got very emotional for quite a few weeks afterward. I mention all this because the experience cannot be done justice by book, film or photo. Any of these mediums is going to fail to be completely successful, and indeed this book also fails, which is a disappointment because I think it's probably in a perfect format to act as a memento for those who have attended. Over 300 odd pages contributors donate a paragraph or two on each of the 26 (up until 2005) events and its fun to see how the festival increased in size and how amateurish it was for so long...but there just aren't ...
