The work of journalists, perhaps moreso than that of other professions, is often viewed in a stereotypical light. Andrew Marr's book however sweeps away much of the romance and glamour in favour of a down to earth this-is-how-it-is approach. He is well suited to the task, having moved through many of the important stages in the print and broadcast hierarchy over the course of his career.
Although the book is billed as a "short history of British journalism", most of the book is taken up with impressively detailed accounts of what a journalist does, how they do it, and why, addressing also issues of personal motivation, bias, editorial influence, government pressure... The historical section in fact only ends up occupying one ... Read More:

From Gladstone to Blair this cassette demostrates the power that oratory can have.
Although familiar with most of the soundbites (one of the problems of the cassette is that you want to hear the rest of certain speeches) it was nevertheless enjoyable to hear Churchill in the Canadian parliament, Thatcher's u-turn if you want to, Kinnocks grotesque chaos and Powell's chilling prophecy.
Also, interesting how much Labour leaders have had to in the words of Gaitskill "fight, fight and fight again", whereas Conservative leaders until more recent times generally got a more receptive audience.
1995-05
Churchill's language is wonderful. Very evocative. However, the set is too short. 3 cassettes are not nearly enough to do justice even to a brief history of our glorious islands. If, you do not have a good understanding of events & timelines & people, then this series may confuse you. Some major events are left out and it jumps time periods. But if you can follow along then his prose is remarkable in its fluidity & power. He wisely spends more time expounding on a few well chosen events, bringing those to life. I thoroughly enjoyed it all & I wish it was 3X as long.

This book is in two halves, telling the story of a mother and her daughter and is a continuation of Legacy of Love. In the first half, Alexa is a child of the sixties, living with rather neglectful parents in a stuffy house in London. Her mother works tirelessly for the underpriveledged in Lambeth and her father is a doctor in a London teaching hospital. Always an underachiever, her heart is at Bishopstrow House in Cornwall with her maternal uncle James and his wife Mary. Here she can really be herself. The story starts when she leaves school. She has a job with two rather bohemian ladies in Chelsea who run a curtain making business in their basement. Here Alexa begins to find that she has great organisational ability and, as a result, the business ... Read More:

I successfully used this book to prepare for the removal of major uterine fibroids. I was frightened at the prospect of my first ever surgery and I would not have come out of it so positively without the book and tape. My surgeon was amazed at my recovery and he only does this type of surgery. Try it for yourself, you have nothing to lose and peace of mind and body to gain.

It's been a while since I lived in Holland and I've been trying to find a way to polish-up my Dutch for a while. There are plenty of books out there that begin at the very beginning language-learning, but few that take you beyond the basics. This is refreshing change.
Rather than ploughing through exercises and chapters on grammar, it throws you in with colloquial Dutch reading and speaking (the title of the book may have given that away) so that you learn phrases people actually use. I've found this to be an excellent way of "getting back up to speed" with the language. I recommended this book.
