Whilst fixing my computer, this book and two others proved invaluable in help me sort out deep problems with my system.
After a lot of work to create the basis required for a wireless home network, my hard drive failed. This book proved very useful in showing just enough information to be helpful, and not too much to confuse the non -professional reader. I have pushed my computer to its limits and feel this book is beneficial to read. Where it is now lacking, I know what to do to improve it. This is a fantastic manual for the interested computer user on a budget.

This book is an absolute MUST for anyone that wants to learn about upgrading and repairing PC's.
It explains everything in simple terms although if you are a complete novice I suspect it may be a little confusing. Ideal if you already understand the basics and are attending a course. Every chapter is in depth with diagrams at times in 'exploded view' which helps you understand the components.
Each section has problem solving and solutions.
As the other reviewer stated, the accompanying disc which should be a three hour dvd on upgrading and repairing is actually a dvd on networking. I just see this as an added bonus, an extension to the book itself.

Author spent too much time being humorous. Fine to take edge of tech subject but gets a bit wearing after a time. I would rather know what limits are on upgrading processor etc. without buying new motherboard, and other info along these lines.

I was extremely disappointed with this book, expecting (perhaps too optimistically) a valuable manual with details of common faults & their fixes, hardware comparisons between vendors etc. Given that laptops are restricted largely to hard-drive and memory upgrades, the book really has little to say that can't be found in any other decent hardware book. It seems that the author thinks that there are no laptops worth discussing other than IBM, and anything older than 2-3 years should be scrapped. The book is full of unnecessary techno-gook that is of little value to the laptop-repair person - who needs to know the AT-command set for modems or the architecture of a Celeron processor (especially when the darned thing can't be changed) these days? ...
