I am not yet a pilot, though I intend to be in the near future. I really enjoyed this book as it gave me insight not only into flying, but also into the attitudes of pilots. While reading this book, you really feel like you get into the heads of these pilots and see their philosophies. And it's fun to read as well!

As an experienced scale modeller, full-sized-pilot & amateur-aerodynamicist I purchased this book (& several others) for my son who is expressing an interest in flying RC aircraft. Having read this book & others I decided that this would have been more than enough on its own. Also, I rather enjoyed reading it for my own benefit.
This book is remarkably well put together. It is obviously written by somebody who has a wealth of relavent and practical experience backed by solid theory and an understanding of the issues faced by somebody wanting to enter the hobby/ sport of RC model aircraft.
The subject matter covers the wide scope of radio control & model aircraft - including fixed & rotary wings - ... Read More:

Whist the information contained in the book is obviously sound I found it far too indulgent in the technical areas. It reminded me of science teachers at school who were so wrapped up in the detail they were unable to convey basic (and not overly complex) theories to the layman.
If you found mathematics and physics a doddle then this book will suit you fine. However, for others you may still find yourself searching the net for far clearer and succint definitions and explanations of normal principals such as how a wing creates lift.
Having read this book I have, if anything, ended up more confused about flying than I was before. However, perhaps when my lessons begin I am able to apply some of this exhaustive theory, ... Read More:
If I was ever to attempt parachuting, I certainly wouldn't do it without reading this book from cover to cover and committing most of it to memory. The layout is terrific, with lots of photographs and very detailed drawings and diagrams, and it's written in such a simple and direct style that it even makes sense to someone ignorant about skydiving, like me. People who step out of an airplane with a parachute are amazing and courageous, but I'm an acrophobic couch potato that settles for getting my thrills watching others do it (think Keanu and Swayze in "Point Break"), or looking through books like this fantastic manual.
"Parachuting-The Skydiver's Handbook" gives you a little history, starting with Leonardo da Vinci, with ... Read More:

I thought I had aeroplane control sussed as a student. A bit rough at the edges and things occasionally happened that I wasn't quite expecting, but good enough and nothing dangerous... Until I read this book.
Langewiesche has writtten a masterpeice on the "art" of flying and is still compulsive reading after 60 years in print. His references are occasionally quaint, such as comparing the "gait" of your aeroplane to the gait of your horse and referring to the elevator as "flippers" (the latter being much less misleading).
If only he'd also written books called "A Practical Guide to International Politics", "Crime Fighting Made Simple" and "Understanding Women" the word would be a better place ;o)

I bought this book on the strength of other reviews and I am not disappointed. Understandably all of the accident descriptions are from the USA but this does not detract from the message.
I have only recently started my JAR-PPL training and am keen to learn. My instructor, and the teaching manuals, have given me invaluable information about how to fly the plane. What this book adds, I think, is other information about the mistakes that pilots (both students and certified) continue to make.
A lot of the suggestions (such as not flying into bad weather) seemed very obvious to me but there were other sections that I found very useful and interesting.
The bottom line is that pilots apparently keep making the ... Read More:

Having completed my Aviation Law exam, I can say in complete faith that Trevor Thom's Aviation Law and Meteorology covers everything! It got me through 100% (except for the PPL Confuser's job of testing at the end of my revision...) and, although you have to read every word to get all the required information, you shouldn't find a question coming up which you know nothing about. Definitely worth buying!
