I'm only about a third of the way through this book but wanted to add to the reviews on the site. If, like me, you happen on this page by accident and think "why not?" please follow through with that first thought and buy this amazing book. It's so rare to find work that really cant be criticised and this, the eloquent reflections of what must have been a wonderful man, could well be one of those rare finds. It's exceptionally well written, filled with intimate details of what England must have been like in less commercial times and as fluid, rhythmic and enchanting as the rivers and streams the author so clearly loves. Did I mention you should buy it?

Walking on Water: A Voyage Around Britain and Through Life
Having had the pleasure of meeting Nick, actually reading this harrowing account, made the story all the more real. I was only 13 when the tragedy happened but, even at such an early age, and as a keen sailor myself, it was indelibly etched on my mind. So to actually read this terrifying, first-hand account, all these years later was gripping. Of all the horror of that fateful race, two good things came out of it; Firstly Nick survived, and secondly he had the courage to document what must have been the most traumatic event in his life. Totally inspiring and a real page turner.

Gripping and dramatic. I read the book in two sittings a few hours apart. I am sure I would have finished it in one but I was dragged away to cook dinner.
The author captures the different natures of the competitors well, builds the sense of excitement both at the start and the finish, as well as capturing the sense of the period, when competitive sailing was much less commercialized than it is now.

This is undoubtedly the finest account of a single handed circumnavigation since Slocum's 'Sailing Alone Around The world'.
The difference is that Flanagan's route takes him west around Cape Horn, head on into the relentless storms of the Southern Ocean, then around the north coast of Russia through the ice of the Northern Sea Route where he is plagued by the beaurocratic quagmire of the Russian authorities.
This book omits all the sensationalism, found so commonly in sailing literature today and focuses on the facts as they happened, both from a psychological and a physical point of view. As a direct result the reader is left with the sense that; Here is a normal man with a dream that through sheer determination, he has made ... Read More:

This book is a compilation of "Confessions", stories sent in to Yachting Monthly magazine by it's readers, documenting their most amusing cock-ups whilst sailing. Perfect for those readers who always turn to the last page first, or in fact anyone who enjoys a giggle with those people who share their misfortunes in such a wonderfully comic style.
My only gripe is that I couldn't put it down, and finished the book within an hour's train journey - it could do with a few more stories... but fear not, there is a second edition coming out.
I would thoroughly recommend this light reading to anyone who knows how many opportunities for humiliation there are at sea.
