Dawkins writes that "the argument of this book is that we, and all other animals, are machines created by our genes" (p.xxi) and that "We are survival machines - robot vehicles blindly programmed to preserve the selfish molecules known as genes" (p.xxi). Yet, according to him, this book "is not science fiction; it is science" (p.xxi)!

Dawkins contrives to overlook the twin discoveries that:
1. the observable traits of organisms are mostly conditioned by the interactions of many genes;
2. most genes have multiple effects on many of these traits.

This is of corse the basis for modern evolutionary works ,that being so it's not quite acurate to todays knowlege so this book is more of a historical book.This particular book is of good quality and structure with detailed image of the different species used as examples.

It may seem misleading to call a 688 page book "brief." Yet, given that "The Ancestor's Tale" covers a couple billion years of history of life on earth, 688 pages is not so long. More importantly, "The Ancestor's Tale" does not seem long when you read it. There is so much to tell, and Dawkins tells it so well. In addition to providing an overview of how all living things are related, Dawkins details numerous wondrous creatures that I certainly never knew existed. This book takes some time to read, but you won't be bored.

The title "The Ancestor's Tale" is a play on Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales." The characters in Chaucer's books meet on the road to Canterbury. Similarly, Dawkins takes each living creature back on a pilgrimage back in time to find their ancestors. ... Read More:

This book is evidence that you can fool quite a lot of people quite a lot of the time. There is not a single original idea in it, and Fennel's beliefs arise out of an interpretation of wolf behaviour that is entirely false. If you want the relationship with your dog to be based on oppression and frustration then this is the book for you, otherwise read something else.

As with all Dummies books, this one is excellent. Covers all areas of Anatomy and Physiology from A'Level and through to at least 2nd Year Degree level. Physiological Systems and Anatomy are explained in a humorous way with many well thought out analigies to really give you a understanding of complex subjects. once again if you are doing A'Level or starting a degree in any human based science then this is a must have. Superb

I bought this book knowing virtually nothing about bees (they exist, they live in hives and they make honey was about the sum total of my knowledge).
I have been considering keeping bees for a while and thought that a little reading would help guide me to a decision.

From memory, the book covers: types of bees (not just honey bees), types of hives, the gear required by the beekeeper, where bee hives can be situated, how bees can be purchased, the maintenance of the colony & hive, pests and how to mitigate their impact, the social structure of the bee colony, the way honey is produced by the bees, the 'swarming' of bees, how to harvest honey from the hive and how to store the harvested honey. There's definitely more - my memory just isn't good enough.

As a first year dental student, following the basic medical science curriculum at Liverpool, I have found this book to be an invaluable resource, yes it has its inaccuracies in places and perhaps isn't as detailed as core texts on anatomy and physiology but for any first year dental or medical student this book is pitched at exactly the right level. I would advise anyone who uses this book to also use a core anatomy text alongside it as at times it does lack information with regards to the relationships between organs and vessels, giving you the anatomy of the structures themselves but not really demonstrating their orientation to surrounding tissues.
