As a newcomer to Charles Williams already familiar with C.S. Lewis, G.K. Chesterton, Tolkien and William Morris I found "Descent into Hell" to be as dense with meaning and full of sheer rejoicing in the capacity of the English language as any of these writers. I would heartily recommend this book on the basis of the sanity and realism of Williams' plot, his clarity and complexity of dancing images conjured in description and explanation, and above all the unavoidable sense that the entire book is illuminated from behind by the clear light of heaven, filtered through it as though through a stained glass window, bright and brilliant to view. Asimov has an easy style, is clearly highly intelligent and achieved fantastic things during his lifetime. It seemed strange to me, therefore, why he found it necessary to take every opportunity to trumpet his achievements; surely they speak for themselves? Is he insecure?
That was one very disturbing element when reading the book. The other was his attitude towards his son and his first wife. Although he doesn't hide his feelings towards them, they are nonetheless to be deplored. There seemed to be a embarrassing lack of generosity towards them. So, an easy enough read, but my admiration of Asimov was seriously undermined by the end of the book.
