What a great book! If you are thinking about doing a degree in fashion design, this is the perfect book to help you decide realistically if this is for you or not. Despite concentrating on the syllabus of a typical fashion design degree it still gives an amazing amount of information regarding many different things.
This is not a how-to-sew book, but if you are thinking about fashion design this book will prepare you and let you know what to expect from a degree.
It has a modern layout and is beautifully and generously illustrated with many pictures. I picked it up expecting a book describing the course, but it is so much more and is a wonderful and fascinating read, taking you through every step of fashion design. ... Read More:

A beautifully put together book which includes some amazing pictures of very well endowed men. Most of the pictures are from the 1970's and pictures are grouped by photographer/studio. There is some interesting information contained within the text of the book, although this text does not feature heavily with the pictures doing the talking. Some interesting mini-bios of the models are included, written by the photographers. If you are interested in the male body, erotic photography or just want to see some massive you-know-whats this is the book for you. Well worth investing in!

Bought this for my sister-in-law, but when my wife saw it she wanted to keep it for herself. (Neither of them is really in the target age-range, but they're both teachers!)
Definitely recommended if you want something to amuse and entertain your kids.

A great book detailing traditional building styles through history and accross the world. From the yurt to the stone shepherds' cottage, vernacular building shows that high-tech is not always the best solution, and that the construction methods that people have been evolving over thousands of years to suit their climate and local materials are actually very sophisticated. An insight into different methods of living in very different cultures. A very well written guide, easy to understand even if you have no previous knowledge, yet in-depth enough to interest at any level. With the beautiful photographs and very high standard of presentation that you would expect from Philadon. This is a lovely, fantastic quality book. Buy it!

I was recommended this book to learn the basics of drafting and found it a total let-down. It claims to be updated for those who draw with a computer but I found this to be little more than an unhelpful footnote in each chapter that avoids real discussion of digital drafting. The advice is spread too thin over unsophisticated presentation techniques that would not widthstand criticism in an architecture school. This is essentially a guide to freehand sketch renderings that take ages and don't look very good.

Considering the significance of architecture, the author remarks that beautiful houses falter as guarantors of happiness and can also be accused of failing to improve the characters of those who live in them and proceeds by explaining why this is so. Karl Friedrich Schinkel for example stated that to turn something useful, practical, and functional into something beautiful is the architect's duty. Architecture should thus be the decoration of construction as distinguished from mere building. The architects of the Modernist movement, like all their predecessors, wanted their houses to speak and express emotions. Indeed buildings speak. They speak of democracy or aristocracy, openness or arrogance, welcome or threat, sympathy for the future or ... Read More:

The New Oxford History of Art represents the first massive effort to rethink this field in detail since Nikolaus Pevsner launched the Pelican History fifty years ago. The volumes are well printed, advantageously priced, and generally refreshing in their point of view. Preziosi's volume is sui generis in that instead of dealing with a period or theme, it is a second order study--of the study of art history. It combines an anthology with interspersed commentary. Unfortunately, the Preziosi commentary, demonstrating the author's effort to find a new approach, is marred by opaque language and a sketchy presentation of ideas. For example, he says that one of his approaches will be based on the principle of the anamorphic image. Although ... Read More:
