This heavyweight hardback is an absolute treasure. It reproduces a selection of colour photos from a personal archive which was started by Albert Kahn in 1909. The collection runs through the next twenty years until Kahn's finds ran out in 1931, and so records all aspects of life at the beginning of the 20th century.
Kahn, a millionaire banker, despatched a team of photographers around the world to capture the essence of many different cultures. He established a collection of over 72,000 photos -- many of them in colour, which was the ground-breaking technology of the time. As I work best with pictures rather than words. I love graphic design books packed with large images full of inspiration. This has images, but not enough- plenty of writing tho! (hahaha) Guess its good for contextual studies though.

This book is an excellent introduction to contemporary photographic themes and practitioners, it's well-written, up-to-date and great value for money.

Unfortunately, because so much ground is covered in such a small space, it's hard to get a true appreciation of some photographers' work when it is summarised down to one or two sentences. Similarly, virtually all photographers are represented by a single image which, due to the format of the book, is often too small for practical purposes. Many of the phographers work demands to be seen as a series if it is to be understood.

This is exactly what I was looking for, a book which taught me the basics then applied them to different situations. I feel a lot more confident playing around with the settings on my camera and my photography has improved as a result. I like the way he has taken a photograph for each subject and then explained the settings on the right hand side. After reading the first two chapters I was able to cover up the settings, look at the photograph and predict what he had used. In no time at all I was grasping the logic and gaining confidence. A lovely book for beginners. I cannot recommend it highly enough. I have many art books, but none as used and flipped through as this book.
It is easy to use as a reference book and would always be first on my list.
With great colour prints of Artists work, a brief history on each Artist and
an important example of each Artists' work.

It is a great book for students at an affordable price, and handy size.

I found this book rather unsatisfying. Like so many instructional works in design, the duality of tacit and explicit knowledge was not bridged and again like so many works of this sort it relies upon a rehearsal of historical and contemporary precedents and exemplars to illustrate formal spatial, geometric and structural concepts. Talking about design is not the same as doing it and I did not feel the book helped one to set about tackling a design problem. The many hand drawn illustrations are engaging - the better ones are those that have not been traced or rendered over from photographs.

Canon EOS 40D Digital Field Guide

Having been a keen amateur photographer for 40 years, I hoped this book would "top up" my knowledge for this advanced bit of kit. Well, just a few pages in, I realised how little I knew and very quickly was taking much better shots and working my way through the more sophisticated features.

Sections on white balance, photo styles and computer editing, whilst not always specific to the 40D, are very useful indeed.

Highly recommended for getting the most out of the great camera.

If you`re like me, attention span of a newt, then this is the book for you!

I`ve got SO many books over the years about Photoshop and whilst i`ll get to about the 2nd chapter i get fed up and move on. Unless, that is, a book comes along that is superbly written and incredibly easy to follow, packed full of useful REAL LIFE information that you will and can ACTUALLY use....this is that book.

Its just an awesome piece of writing.

Simplicity its its key to success. You just follow the simple instructions, repeat, practice and tadaah!! You`ve got it!

Maybe this has just set a standard that other books should follow.....in my eyes it certainly has!

This was the first book of katie's that i read and i really enjoyed it. She is very forward about everything she says and isn't afraid to speak what's on her mind! Thats what i love about it, it's just about her. It's a great read and i would recommend anyone to get it, it would be money well spent! :)
