This book covers all phases of garden design, from original research, obtaining the owner's requirements, site survey sketch, checklist and inventory, to conceptual diagrams, presentation plans, theme plan, preliminary garden layout plan and final planting plans.
It discusses space, light, proportion and scale, colour plates, ground plane, vertical plane, overhead plane, materials, texture, principles of planting design, planting styles, practical considerations, seasonal effects, and rendering techniques for various plans. It also has a plant list and plant hardiness zones at the end. This is one of few books that actually discuss the design aspect of gardens / landscaping. Very practical!

A beautifully put together book which includes some amazing pictures of very well endowed men. Most of the pictures are from the 1970's and pictures are grouped by photographer/studio. There is some interesting information contained within the text of the book, although this text does not feature heavily with the pictures doing the talking. Some interesting mini-bios of the models are included, written by the photographers. If you are interested in the male body, erotic photography or just want to see some massive you-know-whats this is the book for you. Well worth investing in!

Although a very good book for your money (a cuple of quid (£) isn't a whole lot is it) I found this book lacking somewhat.
Although easy to read it isn't easy to learn from and can stub out your excitement at drawing when you come across the word "assignments" at the end of every chapter (if your in college, you know what I mean!). These tasks include things like going out and drawing random people and things you see or from magazines. We all know that practise makes perfect but the tasks at time just seem very strange and not something I'd want to do. The images in these books are for the most part uninteresting and yes i know that the book is "How to draw" but it would have been nice to see some colour as ... Read More:

There are two books on the market which are widely touted as 'must-haves' for any writer looking to get into publication. One is this book, "The Writer's Handbook" (TWH), published by Macmillan. Its rival, the "Writers' and Artists' Yearbook" (W&AY), is published by A&C Black. Both contain roughly the same extensive listings of publishers, agents, print media, TV/radio producers, festivals, writing courses etc. You only really need one of them - but which one?
In truth there's little to choose between them. Much will come down to personal preference regarding the layout of the two books, and so if you can get the chance to compare them before you buy, all the better. However, to me the W&AY appears the more polished product, with a ... Read More:

Hughes has the gift of producing an extraordinarily well turned phrase that, without being needlessly complex, can encapsulate a big idea with ease. Where better to employ such a skill than in explaining the history of modern art? Through each of the thematic chapters Hughes keeps his story grounded in the history of the 20th century, demonstrating how modernism sought to describe the experience of that era and that for many key art movements this was a practical task of vital importance. To bring that vitality and immediacy back through the well-chosen example and well-turned phrase is the heart of this book's success. Hughes expresses views with which other art historians may disagree, but this book is perhaps the best way into the subject as ... Read More:

This is visually very pleasing, but the content is disapointing. I'm happy with the high quality images but what i did not find was a straightforward discussion of design. The text is unnecessarily stylized. For example, a pencil is described as: "the traditional instrument of rapid transfer of thought to a surface". Also, as i read, i often found myself thinking "what is this section supposed to be about?" because the way the chapters are organized sometimes leaves you guessing as to what you re supposed to be reading about. On the up side it did get me thinking about some ideas that were new to me as a non-designer.

I found this insight to Walter Murch and the world of editing truly remarkable. Once I'd started the book I wanted to know more, whether it was about the techniques of editing or how to judge audience reactions of screenings or what is going on in the editing world in terms of what software is out there and available with the advantages and disadvantages clearly listed for you.
Overall, a truly enjoyable read and a useful insight into the mind of an editor.
A must-read for any trainee film editor.

You don't really need an advanced knowledge of Flash to use this book. How to cheat in flash is very, very good. It is targetted mostly at cartoon animators rather than users that will want to do Action Scripting, presentation or web development. This book will guide you through from start to finish for a lot of basic animation techniques and provides a good insight into how to implement your own ideas. it also gives instruction on how to perform commands etc on both the Windows and Mac. Again, I would only recommend this book if you are into cartoon animation mainly, otherwise there are probably better books out there.
