This is a very clear well set-out book with short stimulating exercises. It is essential to use the audio tapes to gain full benefit from the course. The conversations are clearly spoken by native French speakers and all have a humerous approach. It is very important to link the printed word with the spoken word. This course succeeds admirably.The little Support book is a valuable addition. I would highly recommend Books 1 and 2 with their support material to anyone wanting to revise French or start from scratch.

The book (+CD) is good for people, who learn by memorising, scared of the word grammar, loving words like fun. Good points: Every French sentence is translated, and it is shown how to pronounce the words. Some dialogs from the book are on CD, the others are easy to figure out how to pronounce (but it would be better to have all the words and dialogs on CD). Bad points: The grammar is not explained in the book. When you are good in memorising you will be perhaps able to use the phrases from the book, but it will not help you to learn how to build new sentences since the grammar seems to be not a big issue in this book. Lots of text, but more about the "take it easy" subject then about learning French. Sentences like: "Et lui, qui est-ce?" ... Read More:

French: Level 1 (Learn in Your Car)

I drive about an hour each day and wanted something that I could use in the car. Unlike the previous reviewer, I find the sound is absolutely fine. There is an option to have French played on one speaker and English on the other but I reckon it is best on normal stereo. I liked the CD so much, I bought the 2nd and 3rd series. These are not quite as good as the speaker hesitates before saying whether polite or familiar forms are to be used. Also, all are slightly "American" in terms of English phraseology but not too bad. It is a very good way to learn good diction and vocabulary but you really need other material, eg writing and speaking to learn properly. As a school integrating MFL for the first time, a French dictionary is a must. The 360 children that I have watched use this version have all found it very easy to use, and enjoyed the clear layout.
